Drill Press Surprise
2 Attachment(s)
I have been needing a drill press at the shop for a while . Just haven't pulled the trigger . So a couple of weeks ago my son said he was bidding on one at an auction , He got the bid on it . so when it came time to pick it up I got the call . He tells me about half way there that he bought it for me ...
Then I finally asked what he spent on it , 170 bucks . Thought for a used one that was high but okay . When we get to the place and they brought it out on the forklift I was like ummm that's big . When is was set in the truck it set the truck down . Was told it was close to 1,000 lbs . Going to the shop to make room today . ... For reference , My son is 6'2'' This is a Walker Turner . |

Re: Drill Press Surprise
That's a nice machine, great son too. Just pay attention to the safety rules. That's big enough to grab you and beat you against the wall....

Finally got it moved to it's spot in the shop . Hooked it up and just had to try a 1/2" test piece . used a 3/16 bit and followed it with a 5/8 bit . Never knew it was working . Almost silent running with no load . After I was done I put my hand on the motor , It was stone cold

Re: Drill Press Surprise
I did a similar thing a number of years ago. Bought a Clausing drill press when a local machine shop went under. Paid $300 bucks. Deal of the century for a Clausing. It changes spindle speed with a hand wheel. No moving the belt from pulley to pulley to change speeds. Only thing I had to do was change the motor out from 230V to 110V.
As said above be careful if the bit catches it will rip whatever you are drilling right out of your hands. Buy a good drill press vise. You might want to build a small platform bolted to the big platform to make clamping down what ever you are drilling easier. |

What would be My first (Check ) of the table trueness. Here is the closest one I found to start explaining what I would check. Link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...ature=emb_logo I would check the (parallelism) of the spindle to the table. This could be checked with an Angle plate and indicator.
