22" GM Transport Steel Wheels on Square body? Anyone?
 

First, I'll say that I've searched over the past 2 weeks.. here, other forums and google for answers or pictures, but come up empty.

I am curious to know if anyone has attempted to slide a set of these beautiful 22" GM transport steel wheels on a square body? Whether by using adapters or swapping rotors/axles/etc.. If anyone has experience with this, please shed some light.
That being said, I've already got a set on the way. I've done A LOT of calculations and its looking like its possible with about a 2" adapter (to make up for backspacing and center bore issues). And I am curious of the tire choice and clearance issues.
Perhaps I'll be the one to answer my own questions, but I figure I could ask since I couldn't find anything.

I think your going to have to swap rotors, and axles. Or at least have them re-drilled.

From what I have seen online the back spacing will set them a bit inside compared to square body rims. I am referencing other GMT-900 rims on square bodies, and I can not imagine these being different.

So you may end up using spacers to get the right stance.

Well after a lot more research online and using offset and fitment calculators, I went ahead and ordered the adapters. Yes, they are 2 piece. The 5x5 and 6x5.5 patterns share a stud. I was going to swap rotors and axles, but since the offset is so high, I would have to use a spacer. And, I still may do that down the road. I'm aware that adapters have a bad rep.. but I've driven over 100K miles with knockoff Dayton adapters that people have told me are very scary. In my experience, you just need to keep an eye on them and make sure they are tight.
I really just wanted to see if I can get them to fit my Blazer and still be able to lower it.
Here's are some photos of the adapters on my Blazer, the wheel mounted, and the wheels with 255/30s mounted on my friend's lowered 87 c10.
Looks like I'm going to be able to lower it. I have no problem trimming or rolling the fender lip if needed. They seem to clear the rear fine, and do not rub anywhere on the front when turning. I'm really excited

hell yea!!!!!! need more pics of them on the blue truck!!!!! whts the drop on it btw!!! I was gona get a set of these but didn't happen but now ima make it happen!! lol needs some ol school hub caps

I agree, they look awesome on his truck. He said it has 2.5" drop spindles with a coil cut up front and a flip kit in the rear. I dont know which brand of parts that were used.
I'm gonna get them fitted to my Blazer with the drop and then I'll paint em and figure out which cap to use..

*****in!!!!!! have you thought bout running 6 lug rotors up front so you can have more room between the wheel and fender lip??? an thanks for the info!

Man I was totally skeptical when I first read all of this! But u have sold me on this they look AWSOME!!!!!! I now need to find a way for this to work on my 8 lug rear end!

I'm not a fan of big wheels most of the time either, but those big steels look really cool on there in my opinion.

It's too bad they aren't going on that truck. I'm putting them on my 79 2wd blazer today. It's getting lowered as well. I'll post pics when it's done.

Looks like they would tuck alot better up front without the adapter.
Just use an aftermarket 6-lug rotor on HD drop spindles.

My opinion,... run a 5-lug 22" Centerline Smoothie wheel (painted black) for the same effect.
Plus you don't have the gawdy "triple lip" that the GM transit wheels have.

There really isn't much room to tuck up front. I was running 20" ss camaro rims for a bit. It had a pretty bad turn radius. The room in the feont wheel wells is non-existent.

If I decide to keep these, I will work on a way to get a 6 lug rotor with enough clearance for the high offset of these wheels. At that time, I would also need to figure a way to get them to spaced further outward. That high offset will suck them way in without some sort of spacer.

22" Centerline Smoothies - $2332.25 on Summit
22" GM steelies - $550.00 (what I felt was a fair price)
Even with adapters and tires mounted, I'm still $1,000 less than what the smoothies would cost new. I know they aren't in the same ballpark when it comes to construction and materials.. But I'm happy with what I have.
Plus, I want to paint the lips white when I get a chance...to give it a whitewall effect when rolling.

I can get Mcgaughy's 6-lug rotors for the front ..... How about 4x4 rear axles in the rear housing ...? Then use a single spacer to move them out ...? Is that doable ....?

Picked them up from a member of this board... they pop up in the 99+ parts section from time to time.

Here's a shot of them on my 79 k5. 2.5" McGaughy's drop spindles with the flat coil cut. Rear flip with notch. The front sits a little higher, but thats as good as it will get for now. It's my daily, so it's gonna have to be practical. I am happy with it. Looking forward to painting them and figuring out which cap to use.

I was thinkn bout doing the 4x4 axles swap but all the axles I found are not the same length as the truck ones...would this make a difference?

Yes it would as they are held in with C-Clips ...... I wasnt sure if they were the same length or not ....!

they are c clips axles an they are they same spline etc but just different lengths....I heard they was I direct swap but never could get a good answer or wht axles. but he could have custom axles made or swap the whole rear end etc
