When did Sony become junk?

We have always thought of Sony as being quality equipment but our recent experiance (2 failures in the last 3 months) with Bravia TVs has convinced us to stop buying Sony equipment.

We're not exactly happy with the customer service at Best Buy either.

Interesting,
Thought the Bravia was suspose to be top of the line for Sony. I have a Samsung LCD and its nice.

Everyone I ask about TV's usually say either Sony or Samsung.

Best Buy came through.

The local store manager decided that our loyalty was more important than the hassle of doing a special authorization return. We returned the poo-poo Sony Bravia and got a 55" Samsung LED.

Not only did we get a working set without having to wait forever; the Samsung is clearly a supperior unit. It's much brighter, clearer and easier to set up correctly.

i bought a 46'' Bravia and the 2 yr warranty. I guess its a good thing. It'll probably go out the day it expires.

Re: When did Sony become junk?

After returning the Sony, the extended warranty and tax we got the new TV with a new extended warranty.

All told - we had to pony up $271 extra to get the new set (could have come close to an even exchange on an open box unit but I didn't want one that 500 kids had touched the screen on... lol) due to price difference and the difference in cost (caused by price difference) in the warranty.

This is what we got:

huh, our 40" Sony bravia has been great. We got it on Black friday 2008 so not too old though.

I hope it continues to work for you. I don't know if the particular model we had has an issue or if it was just a gigantic cooincidence, but we sure like the new TV.

LED rocks!

I thought I would put a good Pioneer radio in my truck. It is made in China. Maybe your Sony is made in China. They are made cheaper, but the price to buy them is not cheaper.

Re: When did Sony become junk?

Sony used to be my go-to brand. A few years back we had three bad experiences with Sony - a 200 disc changer that was defective, Crutchfield replaced it. A NIB digital camera died. Then a DVD one year and one week old died and they wouldn't replace it. I just quit buying Sony stuff.

My sons 42" Sony lcd tv died about 3 months after the warranty expired. He's not very happy with them.

Re: When did Sony become junk?

Sony used to represent a benchmark of quality at a reasonable price. They've coasted on the name way too long. That Sony DVD player I mentioned that died one year and one week after the purchase date went to the city dump because it was one week out of warranty. <shrug?> It was out of warranty, that's the way it goes.

That was my first DVD player and my kids were young and into it. So I told my wife we can't afford to buy a Sony every year, so go get that $40 DVD player they have at Walmart. That was at least six years ago and that same $40 DVD player from Walmart is still kicking and has never missed a beat. Sony is low-tier, and too bad - my first was an XR65-B and XM-120 that kicked on and on. Now they manufacture junk. If they're good with it, so am I - I dropped them years ago and it's no longer my problem.
