fabricating a cowl hood from an old one?

soops cost too much for just a daily driver and i was thinking today that i ahvean old hood laying around. can i fabmy own owl hood out of this? i'm thinking jsut cut a tp piece and then some side pieces from teh top of the hood also, but how would you go about welding these together ? wat kind or joint? has anybody done this? thanks

weld, grind, weld, grind, weld, grind. Thats about it. If you have at least 2 spare hoods go for it. Jut cut out a piece that is the same length as the hood, then move it back a few inches and spot weld it, then bend the sides and go as high up as you want. You will have to do very small tack welds all over the place so you don't warp the metal. Then grind it all smooth when your done and glaze it, prime it and paint it. UM, oh yeah, you would be alot better off just buying one though. This will take tons of hours worth of work, and might turn out horrible, but then again it might look sweet. Up to you. :flag:

It might be from 20 years ago it takes people time to finish a project. And aside of that, I do know how to spell I was in a hurry though. And I thought this was a truck forum not a grammer forum . So keep your smart a$$ remarks to your self.

P.S.-I was trying to get nothing more than a remark if he finished or just went out to buy one.

Way too many threads go un-resolved. I use the search a lot. Most of the times, my question is already in a thread, but the person who asked never followed up, or followed through with their results. I feel your pain :D

i thought about this last year, but the square edges were the part i couldnt wrap my head around. if they were, well, more like the fiberglass versions, i'd do it in a heartbeat. i really like the idea of raising the factory lines onto the scoop.

hey screw you man i'm an english master, i just type a million words a minute and dont care about mistakes, you get the point, hahahahah. uh, as for the hood, i was 16 then, stupid, thought i could do anything, and didnt finish it, actually i sold everything having to do with 67-72 chevy trucks. the funny thing is now i could do it in a day but its way easier and cheaper to buy an already made hood. and i'm still in school, one more year of college hopefully i'll have a degree in management and a minor in visual art. who revises 4 year old threads anyway?

Woah you're still here!

Anyway, I had this crazy idea of doing a "shaker" scoop like on the 2nd generation Camaros. I figure all you have to do is get the scoop piece, which is actually the top of the aircleaner. Then you'd have to cut a nice looking hole in the center of the hood and maybe cover the edges with a split piece of hose. Kinda jerry-rig style, anybody think this would turn out ok?

I considered doing it after seeing how mucha cowl induction hood costs...... twice as much as my "new" engine.

got any pics of the attempt......I *think* that I might be able to do it.....but I'm 17 now and in no hurry to cut up my hood.
