5 speed LS 72 Blazer build
 

Greetings all! I am brand new to the forum, but I have already found a wealth of information to help me out with my build so far. I am building a 72 Blazer- bought it as a roller- with a 5.3 LS motor out of a 2004 Tahoe and an NV 4500 5 speed out of a 2004 3/4 ton silverado. It has a 6 inch lift with 35s. Will be my daily driver when it is done. I welcome any comments or suggestions, and I will post questions that I could use your expertise on regularly. This is my first complete build, and I am already learning a ton through the young process.

First question is regarding motor mounts. I know 72truckman did a very similar build a few years ago, and he used some leftovers from a DIY4X(which won't work with 4X4 truck such as mine) cross member to fab his mounts. Are any of you aware of prefabbed mounts available today, or am I probably going to have to create my own?

I believe there are a few motor mount options- I modified a DIY4X for my 4wd build, it worked okay.

I thought about the Pacific Fab option, but when I called them to discuss it, they told me that it wouldn't work with my A/C compressor. I'll check out dirty dingo, though. Thanks!

The Dirty Dingo mounts are listed to fit just about everything but the 67-72 trucks/blazers!
I think because of the combination of A/C and mounting issues, I'm going to just have to fab them like several others have done. I'm a bit nervous about this as I am not an expert in metal fab, by any means!

I bought an 87 half ton 4x4 today to steal some parts from. I'm going to take the wheels, drive shafts, transfer case, radiator, and brake set up from the 87. Any suggestions as to other stuff on my donor that might work with my 72?

I don't think just the mounts will work, but in conjunction with their bolt in cross member will.

At least that's the way I read it, I am leaning towards that option. I am working on gathering parts to do the same exact swap.

Lol, it won't leave blakes shop without a turbo or two, a Holley efi setup with hi-ram intercooler, and running 8s. :lol:

I didn't see it that way, but I will go back and look again. I have been working with a friend of mine that is a builder, and we have seen some promise using a TransDapt plate kit, with the original towers and the part of the original crossmember that bolts to the frame. If it works, like it looks like it will, we will just have to fab the cross piece that goes underneath the motor.

It is hard to find on their website, look at this. The way I read it you can either specify new style LS mount clamshells, or their DD-2585-4 mounts at a discounted price when purchased with their crossmember. I think I am going with the adjustable mounts because I don't know just exactly where the NP205/NV4500 will end up. I "think" it will end up in exactly the stock location.

How are you going to mate your NV4500 with the 205 transfer case? I got a freshly rebuilt 205 with my blazer, but couldn't find a good way to mate it to the NV4500 without an expensive adapter kit, so I ended up going with a 208 transfer case out of the 87 truck that I talked about earlier in the thread. Not quite as bulletproof as the 205, but I'm not planning on mudding mine very much. just curious!

Finally got the Dirty Dingo cross member and mounts in:uhmk:
going to put them in in a day or 2. I'll post pics of the engine mounted.

I cheated.......... I found a 1985 6 hole round mount 205.

Actually, given I am now going the LS route versus the 4BT Cummins, I may drop back to a 208 myself. I could see the overkill with the Cummins, but I can also see the wisdom of cutting unnecessary weight......

Don't discount the 208, they are tougher than you think, they just don't like getting bashed by rocks, etc......
