I got the calipers all apart and the pistons are pitted around where the dust boot seal touches them when full retracted. I pulled out the seal kit that I purchased and the dust seal in the kit is MUCH smaller than the one that came off the caliper. SO, I did some more research on the parts, the Versailes rear discs are 10.675" in diameter. The ones I have are 11.5" in diameter. Looking at the specs for the 1977 Mark V, those have the 11.5" brakes with larger calipers.

thanks for the info on the calipers! I just didn't realize the difference, and almost ordered the wrong ones also!

Glad my mistake helped you out, Tommy.

It had been so long since I did this swap and most of my orginal documentation is either missing or lost (I have moved 4 times since and parts of this truck have been in multiple places). I have a 3 ring binder going for this time around and will have a better documentation this time.

Well it has been quite a while since I posted on this one. Just a little update on things. Baseball started for my boys about the time of my last post. That lasted into June. We bought a 1995 Ski Brendella boat in June which turned into what we did all summer and plan to take it out this weekend. Both my boys can now wake board and my daughter loves to tube and just jump in the water when we stop to switch out skiers/tubers.

I have not done a thing to the truck except collect a few parts. I picked up a few stock steelies(I have 6 now) and a couple of 8" rallies. I need one more 6.5" rally to make a set. Plan to pick up a TH350 trans within the next week or so.

Also, started another project with my oldest son....

I hate to say it, but there is more important things than these old truck. Family is where it's at. I don't have much family left. Congrats on the summer fun and new project.

My plans for this time are to get it running and driving for now. I am not going to be concerned with body work and rust repair yet.

I will be doing some on it soon as I get ready to hall over my son's project to the house this next weekend.

We got Korbin's 82 home and started working on it. Since it will be awhile before he is driving, I will be using the transmisson in this one. We got the motor pulled and trans out. I cleaned the trans up and will replace the seals and filter before putting it in mine.

I will have to post pictures in Korbin's thread for the work we did. I will get some shots of what we are doing to mine soon.

After going to the GG Lonestar Nationals this past weekend, I am a little more motivated to work on mine again. They anounced a spring show at TMS for next year, that is my new goal...We will see...

Stay tuned!

Bring those boys back w/ya. Keep them coming to the shows to see what they like & can use toward the build(s). Did you keep that 9" that was in the 65?

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

I plan to bring them to all the events I can. They even enjoy going to swapmeets when we can. Korbin seems to like the Square bodies now, and Owen likes the 67-72 style. I like all three...

For now I have the 9", I may get a new housing and axles in the width that I need for my "new" tire size, but my even look for a stock 12 bolt to convert to 5 lug. I will have to weigh costs at this point..

I'm looking for one @ 58" wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. If I can find what I'm seeking, I'll have a 68 12bolt w/5-lug Moser axles available....

I think the 8.8 rear out of a Ranger is 57" if that helps you. How wide is the 68 rear (wms to wms)? I will have to keep you in mind. I will look around here for a 58" wide rear...

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Well after seeing SCOTI's progress on his, I thought I might update mine.

I really have not gotten anything done worthy of pictures. I pulled out a TH350 trans from another project that had been rebuilt a few years ago before the PO parked the truck. I cleanned up the outside and pulled the pan and fluid looks OK, so I ordred up a B&M shift improver kit, a new flex plate, bolts, and a chrome pan & bolts.

Hopefully before Christmas, I will get the trans done and possibly bolted up to the engine. After Christmas, I plan on putting the engine/trans into the frame rails to work on the headers/exhaust along with the brackets and pulleys for the accecessory drive.

Can you believe that Christmas is in 21 days?

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Well I got some time to work on my project. Had to clean out the garage a little first. I got the shift kit and new filter installed in the trans before we left on our ski truip. Yesterday, I planned to get the engine and trans together so that I could put them in the frame. I got the new SFI flexplate and ARP bolts on the engine, the TCI converter is from years ago and is ready to install. Well, went to put the converter in the trans and realized I forgot to get the front seal at the parts store. So, that is where I stopped last night. I called this morning and the parts store is open today, so I will get back at it later today.

Flexplate installed on engine:

11" TCI Breakaway Converter ready to go in:

Hopefully I will post more later, we will see how today goes. I have a few things I must do around the house this weekend.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

I did get the engine and trans installed in the frame yesterday. I ended up changing from the black mounts (which I thought were V8 mounts) back to my original 6 cyl mounts. I did not like how far forward the engine sat with the other mounts. My only concern is the clearence between the driver side valve cover and the firewall in the recess area. There is only about 1/4"-3/8" clearance between the two. The other side is fine.

I might have to redo my brake lines, there might not be enough room for headers and shift likage the way I ran my lines...we'll see. I did not work on it at all today. Just had other things that needed my attension around the house...

Here are some pics:

close up at the valve cover, my finger will not fit between the two:

There is plenty of clearance to install/remove the HEI distributer with the cap removed. I put it in after the engine was already installed:

Are those tall v.covers (hard to tell from the monitor sometimes)?

aggie91 01-03-2011 10:01 PM

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Yea, Scoti, they are tall vcovers. I like the way they look better then the short ones, I was going to do painted ones, but those chrome ones where cheaper then the plain steel and this set up might be temporary until I can do another engine.

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Not sure what I should do next. Most of it costs money and that is tight right now. I have a couple of styles of headers from other projects, I might see it they will fit. I need to finish up the brackets/pullies/belts for the altenator, I need to finish the brakes, mount the 4 calipers and pads. I need to order the fuel pump and hoses. I need to measure and order my drive shaft. I need to do a lot of things. I guess I will start with the headers then the alternator stuff. If the headers fit, then I will finish the brakes and possibly bleed them...

Just thinking out loud...

What kind of fuel pump do you need? It looks like you need a mechanical. If so I have a brand new one that I bolted up then removed it. It is a stock replacement. If your interested I will donate it. ;)

Thanks Allan, I will use a mechanical pump. Stock will most likely work. I will let you know.

I might have a set of the 'Chevrolet' embossed chrome short style v.covers (newer chevy performance style, not old vintage script). I had them on one of my motors @ some point but they were in good shape & would help your clearance isses.

Heck, for that matter, I think I have a 'short' set of those plain chrome ones like your using. They came on another sbc & were pretty decent as well.....

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Thanks Scoti. I think that I will be fine with these. I know at some point I will be changing the firewall to clear it and smooth some things out anyway.

Last night after posting I found some energy and time to do a little on the engine. Now I have another issue that I will need to decide on. In the pictures, I took the time to mock up 2 different headers on each side. On the passenger side both fit well and did not rub on anything. The pictures show that one set hangs down much futher then the other. The one set hangs 4.5" below the frame rail! The other set only hangs down about 2.25" below the frame rail and reaches further to the rear.
Passenger side Set 1:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_2104.jpghttp://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_2103.jpg

Passenger side Set 2:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_2102.jpghttp://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_2101.jpg

On the Driver side I had other issues. Set 1 fits perfect, but hangs down too far. Set 2 fits and does not hang down too low, BUT up top, the #5 tube HITS my brake lines coming down from the master cylinder. I wish I had a Driver side header that fits like Set 1 up top, but hangs down like Set 2...:waah:

Driver side Set 1:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_2100.jpghttp://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_2099.jpg

Driver side Set 2:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_2098.jpghttp://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_2097.jpg

I had to force the lines over and back a little to even get the header to line up with the mounting holes. The lines sprung back in place when I took the header out. My issue is do I look for other headers that fit the way I want, or do I just make new lines that clear these headers? These headers (Set 2) came off a 68 Camaro, but the owner of the car has no idea what brand they could be. He got the car with them on it. He now has a set of Headman's on it and the look similar to these. These are rusted pretty badly in places and might even have a few holes in them. The Set 1 headers are Flowtech, but I cannot find a part number on them. They are in OK shape and would probably clean up and be fine, they just hang way too low.

I might just cut up Set 1 so that i does not hang so low, but then I would not be able to buy a new coated set later one. My buddy with the Camaro is going to get me some pictures of the new Headmans on his car to see if Set 2 looks like them and might be older Headmans...He just had shoulder surgery and can't drive the car to work for me to have a first hand look at them on his car...

What do you guys think?

Use the set that offers the best ground clearance & tweak or re-make the brake lines. You did good once, the 2nd time should be better right? ;)
