54 3600 mountaineer awd chassis swap " mountain cat"

1 Attachment(s)
I started a new thread seeing how the mountaineer wasn't complete. I'm now using an aviator chassis http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=717927

I hope I'm doing this post correctly. This is my first post on this forum and the first time to post a build. 1st I'd like to thank this forum and everyone that post so much useful information. I can not thank all of you enough! In return I'm going to do my best to post my next build. Which is only my second build. Saying that I just want to say any advice and consideration about this build is truly appreciated. So here we go!
I lucked out and found a 1954 3600 caterpillar service truck on CL for $500, the guy was clueless. I talked him down to 400 before I even made the drive to go see it, once I saw it I gave him the full asking price of $500. I also found a wrecked 2002 mountaineer awd at a auction for another $500. So far so good on price. My 1st build took me 10 years and $30k. My goal on this one is less then $10k and less then a year to build. I know I will need yalls help! To start off I'm just going to start with tearing it apart and see what I have to work with. I also have a wrecked Tahoe that has a 5.3 to use for hp. I really would like to add a turbo to this one. I pick up the mountaineer Tuesday. I'll post more pics soon. The mountain cat build has begun!

I also got lucky and found these fully functional gauges on CL. The back still has the original inspectors red tag on it.

This is one of the fenders that looked like the cab before a little clr and buffing with cutting compound. At one point someone tried to touch it up with a different yellow. It's been a challenge to save as much original yellow that I can. I will be leaving it to its original Yukon yellow

Welcome and Great find on a new project..not sure how your posting but on mine when I post below this box where I click submit it says "manage attachments" when I click that it gives me 5 spots to choose files..when I click those it takes me to my pic gallery and I click the pics I want and then hit download..and all the pics go to the post...I know some can load more than that on a single post..

If your gonna do a build thread you might want to move this to the project and build section..

what a great and weird idea to use the mountaineer, I am very interested in this!

I like bright paint jobs too, yellow, orange, kawasaki green, especially red. I used to have a yellow truck and some of my friends had the others, we used to all park together and take a skittles picture.

Cjcolbyjack: I did the same thing when I started mine a few years back. You'll have to start over and you will be able to download 5 photos at a time. Great find!! Looking forward to the build. dug

Re: 54 3600 mountaineer awd chassis swap " mountain cat"

I can only upload 1 pic at a time. I go to advanced and it gives me 5 "choose file" options. I then pick 5 photos and hit upload. Once the upload is complete it only shows the 1st pic I put in choose file? Thanks!

Re: 54 3600 mountaineer awd chassis swap " mountain cat"

Hmmm.I'm not sure what's going on..are you putting each pic in a different "choose file" location..when you do it should show the picture file number...each time you click a open"choose file" it should let you choose a pic.

I have this problem when I use the IPad. Others do too. Haven't figured a way around it.

And on a computer I am able to upload five pictures. Select first picture, upload it, select second picture, upload it...and so on. Doesn't work so well to select five pictures and upload all at once.

When posting a reply I have to go to advanced to get to manage attachments. Then I have the 5 lines to choose file then upload. I'm sorry I must be doing something wrong. I hope my build doesn't go this bad lol

Re: 54 3600 mountaineer awd chassis swap " mountain cat"

Ok looks like you've got one pic loaded..go to the next line that says choose file and add another...and so on until you have several choose files filled...unless your having issues like Doug is saying...what type of device are you using? Mine shows up like my pic above..not an actual pic in the spot...where are you getting your pics from? I have to go to gallery on my tablet to download pics..

mongocanfly 09-06-2016 11:03 PM

Re: 54 3600 mountaineer awd chassis swap " mountain cat"

I don't have to go advanced...I just click post reply under the posts and it takes me to that page..your build will be fine I'm sure...I have way more trouble with computers than I do building stuff..haha

Ahhh...now I see (ipad) at the top of your page..that's the trouble Doug was describing..that counts me out on this one..maybe someone else can help with your problem..I'm using a samsung tablet..

so as advertised a 2002 mountainer awd, 4lo and 4hi, independent rear wheel drive and 4 wheel disc brakes. unfortunately at some point the front transfer case and drive shaft were removed. :waah: the wheelbase is 113.7 60.9 in the front and 61.2 in the rear which is a 8.8. i believe those are good measurements? im still going to take the cab off and look at what i have. even without awd i like it better then a s10. i hope im not going to learn later theres a reason people dont use a mountaineer chassis? something tells me i should wear a cup this build because everyday im going to get kicked in the nuts with this mountaineer. any advice or concerns yall may have to prevent this will be truly appreciated! on the bright side i did win a 02 escalade for 500 bucks. theres my 6.0 and trans. hopefully theres enough parts to sale and get most of that back

mongocanfly 09-07-2016 09:45 PM

Re: 54 3600 mountaineer awd chassis swap " mountain cat"

How are you gonna incorporate the LS and trans into the mountaineer chassis and drivetrain with the all wheel drive

Its probably because there will be a lot of "custom one off stuff"...of the top of my head, cab/body mounts, motor mounts if going w/LS, trans mount, radiator mount, etc...

When you start getting into that many mounts, i'm sure the long timer's will chime in that body alignment becomes "interesting".

Plus given your current set up you're probably going to need to find a 2wd front suspension and hope it bolts in, or to Mongocanfly's comment, how are you going to mate the drivetrain to the LS?

Not saying it can't be done. Anything can be done with the will, time and money....(see moon landing ). So this build will need a lot of trial and error, (see will and time) and if you have to keep going to the well, might need more parts (see money). To answer the question of why it hasn't been done is probably no one wanted to invest the time, will/energy or money to get it done.

It does sound interesting though and hope you can get it done.

Attachment 1568599 iMy brothers a machinist. He's talked me into believing we can make an adapter to use with or with out the factory transfer case to tie everything together? I knows there's electronics involved but I'm pretty sure I can get around that? Notice how I put question marks behind most of my sentences. I don't know for sure, we just think we can. Please tell me your doubts or concerns! I love criticism! Especially when it saves me time and money! That's the main reason I'm putting a build on the Internet. No offense I like new friends, but not being kicked in the balls is my ultimate goal at my age. I just got back from drinking at a friends shop. I hope anything I'm saying doesn't come out wrong. I'd like to say thanks and I'm sorry if I sound like an idiot. Good night!

Iowaboy pretty much is spot on..(moon landing) i like that..anything is possible..if you do much reading on here theres alot of projects that get off to a great start and then seem to disappear over time (unfinished)as time/money/interest/ becoming overwhelmed all become issues..they just seem to fall by the wayside..don't do anything until you have a plan and expect to change that plan several times..there will be a lot of trial and error with everything you do..I hate electrical but that may be the easiest part of this...the LS harness is pretty much stand alone...alignment of body parts and mismatched mechanicals could get interesting to say the least..what does the mountaneer bare frame look like? ( I could see this leading to a lot of drinking at your shop to) haha.. depending on your level of fab skills carries a lot of weight on a untested combination of parts.. (somebody had to be the first to do the s10 frame swap) ( somebody had to be first to do every mod we do to our trucks)...but there's a lot to be said for using the info found here on a swap that's been done many times and you would have a wealth of info to fall back on..

i absolutely agree. im very fortunate to have a lot of friends in all areas i may need help in. im also an electrical contractor. which is a great bartering tool, everybody needs a plug and or lights somewhere. that along with this forum im hoping itll go so much easier than my 1st build. now the build has to be completed because i talked some mad trash to my buddy last night about spanking his border line dragster. its amazing what a 6 pack will do to my mouth. thanks for tagging along and the advice!!
