chopping the dash to install modern cd player
 

does anyone have a guide for this? it could be the large style reciever for gps etc, or the standard cd player size. i guess i really just need to know if i need to install some kind of case behind the firewall to house the deck. any help appreciate. thanks!

I think most of the people here would recommend not cutting the dash. There is an underdash mount available from Crutchfield I believe.

i think im going to do it regardless, i dont wanna mount under the dash, and the glovy doesnt seem too practical for the driver

THE RADIO YOU WANT UNLESS IT'S A FLIP UP SCREEN WILL TAKE THE RADIO AND ASH TRAY..
I'd build a center console first..
I'm not one of those, don't cut it people either..
but those gps units are huge
what one you looking at so I have a better idea..

I agree with Rick and Scott,dont cut the dash.You are better off hiding a high dollar head unit out of sight,these trucks are way too easy to break into.As suggested look at the Crutchfield site they have alot to choose from.I would put a cheapo head unit(older knob style)that fits in the stock location and hide your high dollar electronics.But thats my .02.

I'm from the other team. It's your truck, if you want to cut it , cut it... I cut the dash in the White '67 for a newer style radio and never looked back. On the other hand my mostly stock Green '67 I won't cut, but the original radio works in it.... If the next guy that owns your truck doesn't like the cut dash he can fix it...:)

I think you need to get the aftermarket stuff you want and go from there. That way you will have the exact sizes you need and you can make cardboard templates and tape them to the dash to better see what you are up against.

I always find it amusing when someone asks a question about doing something like cutting dashes or chopping tops and people need to shout out dont do it, even though the OP didnt ask for an opinion, which would be different.

I can see if someone says Im going to do this or that and its a safety hazard of some sort. Toss out the dont do its, and explain why it would be a hazard.

I just ordered a AM / FM radio with inputs for an iPod from Classic. Once I install it I will post some pictures. They claim that you don't have to cut your dash. I have a ton of CD's that I have converted to the iPod so I can just pull the iPod out when I leave the truck. I don't want any of my old Lynyrd Skynyrd CD's to get stolen.

Fine tha unit you like..get tha specs..make a template & hold it up to tha dash. I;m sure you'll have to plate over tha factory dish in tha dash..plate over tha ashtray. I's you want a DD unit...cut it...it's only metal & it yours..good luck..

I say make it how you want. If you search this site, there is a guy who did some metal cutting / welding / blending to make a double din deck fit in the stock dash location. I cant remember if he removed the ash tray or not to make room, but who uses the ash tray on a tricked out truck anyways? It looked sick!!! My dash was already cut, so I installed a new Alpine with pandora and bluetooth. I hid the IPOD tail and routed it into the glove box so I could keep my ipod out of the way / hidden and not on the floor or seat.

I ran my ipod cable thru my ash tray and hung the ipod on the front of the ashtray when i take it off the cable goes in my ashtray and i close it no ugly cable to hang out:four:

yea the po of my wife's 67 got his cd player stolen and the hot wire grounded out on the dash and melted some of the wireing it set for 3 years...... and he sold it to me to fix her at a good deal:smoke:

I cut my dash and didn't give it a second thought. I want a GPS in my truck, but my truck is not going to be stock either. I do like a stereo mounted in a console.

i say do what ya like, but i don't need cd's anymore with the technology of mp3 etc.. i think i'm gonna look into the secretaudio some more. i want the cleanest dash/ interior i can get

I put an original AM in my stock uncut dash. I rerouted all wires under my seat almost directly in the center. My head unit fits perfectly between the bottom of the seat and the floorboard, and is held in place with Velcro on the underside. The faceplate is mounted flush with the edge of the seat and it is "almost" completely hidden to the untrained eye. You should see my friends trying to turn the radio station on the original unit. :lol:

I decided to go this route for a couple reasons.

1. I've had components stolen in the past and the more the crook can see, the more the crook can take. ;)

2. I like the look of these trucks with uncut dashes and "original looking" interiors. I don't think the cut dashes look horrible, I just prefer not.
