Help with "oil canning"
Hey guys, the roof of my cab has some large dents that are oil canned. I can put a suction cup in the middle of the dent & when I apply suction, the dent pops out.
My questions: 1. I assume I need to work the outer ring where the dent starts? 2. I plan on slapping as best I can then using localized heat, yes/no? 3. Apply heat dead on the outer ring, to the inside or outside? I googled & you tubed oil can dents to try & edumacate myself but I don't think it made me any smarter! |
Re: Help with "oil canning"
im not sure how you were planning on heating the outer ring...
but do a search on friction disc...I've seen it used and it works...it may work alot better in the hands if someone that knows how to use it...I've never used one...but its basically a spinning flat metal disc that generates friction heat.... |

Thanks Greg. I have a shrinking disc, also have a shrinking tip for my stud gun. I'm thinking the disc will work better than the stud gun, it will stay on the high spots & cover more area. Think I'll give it a try anyway.
Thanks for the video links, I'd already seen 2 of the three! |

Re: Help with "oil canning"
The first thing you need to do is fine the "Crown." The dent will have a "Crown" around the sides, a high spot, that is holding the center of the dent down. Push the dent up and work that crown a bit, you may not even need to shrink.
But if you do, YES the shrinking disc, that is basically a "heat block" heating only the high spots, it's a brilliant tool. Brian |
