My new 67' 4WD project!!

Hey guys, I'm new to the site so thought I'd show you my new project! Well I'm moving to Minnesota in June with my wife and figured I needed to pick up a 4x4 for those snowy winters (seeing as I sold my old truck, sniff sniff). Well i got an awesome deal on this 1967 Chevy pickup, factory 4WD, SM420 4-spd manual with rockwell 221 transfer case. It has a 350 in it now with edelbrock carb/intake/waterpump, HEI and longtubes. Dana 44 front and 12bolt rear. It's got a small suspension lift on it and he had 35's (as seen in a few of the pics) but he wanted to keep those so he slapped on the original rally wheels with 33's. Here are my plans for once we move (already got wife approval).

Swap in 6.0 LQ4 engine with LS6 intake and camaro accessories (plan on building it later but will run stock rotating assembly for now)
LS6 cam or LPE GT7 (haven't decided yet, could aso be torquer v.2 with 115lsa)
Custom twin turbo setup (either using 84-85 turbo coupe turbos or twin 60-1)
I'll be keeping the SM420 trans (it's heavy duty and will be fun with the granny low gears hahahahaha)
Rear fuel tank conversion
restore the interior with a few added touches (billet glove box door, ashtray, restored gauge cluster with white faces, autometer gauge setup in glovebox for the fuel press/airfuel/tach etc, I want the interior to look mostly original aside from the billet dress up and steering wheel)
refresh the wood bed
fix the small rust spots and two-tone paint (sunset orange and black, possibly red pearl/black)
restore the rally wheels (powdercoat black) and install chrome trim rings and center caps
slap 35x12.50 tires on it
Roll pan(maybe new factory chrome bumper, what do you think?), side body exit exhaust
custom driveshafts, upgrade axle shafts/gears
and put a nice stereo in it to replace that glovebox speaker haha

It's going to be fun and I can do it pretty cheap (stretch the use of the word) for how I'm going to run it. I'll probably drop the motor in stock and get all the bugs worked out then mod it as I go, I'm also debating stroking the small block that's in here and throwing a TPI setup (hi-flow version) on top for some good stump pulling power. Here are some pics!!

Man that is looks awesome! If lived where it snowed, I'd would want a long bed 4x4.

Re: My new 67' 4WD project!!

Ya, I love the slammed 2wd C10's, but that won't fly around the snow lol. I can't wait to start working on it, I'm going to start on the interior and cab then the bed. The motor in it now runs great so will probably drive it as is for awhile while i fix everything else.

Oh, and I vote for chrome bumpers. :)

That's what I'm thinking, chrome front and rear, hidden hitch with drop ball.

Awesome, looks way better(and more complete) than the '67 4x4 I am working on.

Re: My new 67' 4WD project!!

Thanks!!! I sent some pictures to my mom because she was always into vintage cars/trucks and she said it looked like a POS lol. I guess she's not up on the times much anymore lol. I snagged it for $1500, think that's a good deal? Cab corners/rockers replaced already (not done perfectly so still need a little work but not bad), has some bondo spots and little rust spots but nothing too crazy

looks like it has a speedwarning dash cluster... theose are worth some $$$

sweet truck, i wish my 67 was a 4wd

Re: My new 67' 4WD project!!

Sorry to sound ignorant but what is the speed warning cluster? I'll have to do some research but this is my first older chevy truck (I've had a 98' GMC, a bunch of F-bodies, 69' Tempest (gto clone) was my last build, and I have a 95' mustang GT right now cuz I got an awesome deal on a showroom quality car lol). Still doing alot of research to find out everything I can about it :)

Re: My new 67' 4WD project!!

Looks like a real good start. I say go chrome on the front and back bumper as roll pans don't look that good on 2wds let along 4x4's. I also say stick with stock interior, leave the billit out and the truck will always look good. Billit is getting over played but clean stock always has a great look about it.

Re: My new 67' 4WD project!!

speedwarning is that white pointer on your speedometer, it has the knob right by the wiper switch that controls when the buzzer goes off, aka speedwarning. it is quite rare for a truck to have, i belive it was a 67-68 thing only. not sure on that though

Re: My new 67' 4WD project!!

Ya just did some research on it and saw the differences between the 2 clusters and it does look like I have the speed warning cluster!!! That's pretty cool, I got the truck for $1500 and it runs and drives great, just needs a little work but nothing major.

Re: My new 67' 4WD project!!

I'm thinking about painting the truck using the same coating I used on my 69' pontiac frame. It's completely rust proof, actually cures with moisture, and can withstand 15000hrs of salt spray (perfect for the minnesota winter), designed as a bridge/anti-graffiti paint. Here's a picture of the semi-gloss on my frame, but they offer it in a gloss black made for areas that are exposed to direct sunlight (their chassis black that is chip resistant fades in the).

What do you guys think? It won't take home any best in show paint awards but should look good, apply easy and withstand all the winters.

is that paint por15?

RamAirZ 03-27-2008 10:20 PM

Re: My new 67' 4WD project!!

nope but very similar, i chose it because huge price difference lol. works just as good and looks just as good for about half the cost. They offer a exterior version in gloss black, red, white, and silver that. It goes on just like POR 15 too, 2 coats of the silver rust proof primer stuff, then 1 top coat equals super rust strength lol. I'm thinking black body and paint the top of the cab with the silver.

Re: My new 67' 4WD project!!

Sweet!! I don't live there yet, my mother and law and family are there right now (my brother-in-law went and picked the truck up for me, I found it on craigslist). I'll be there in June, we should definately get together. I plan on pulling the body/bed off of it and cleaning the frame up and fixing all the rest and coating everything, so I could sure use a hand (did my 69' by myself!!, used floor jacks and jackstands to get the frame off lol)

here is my email address if you need anything. tzerwas@sherbtel.net

Where are you moving from?

The weather here has been teasing us with some 45-50 degree days, makes me start wanting to get the truck out..........
