'51 1300 attempt at restoring

Hi folks, I'm the proud new owner of a '51 chev1300(Canadian version).
I've acquired a '92 s10 frame, and an '81 Z28 with a 400sb and th200 tranny.

The frame is almost done, and just in the process of removing the engine.

I have a bunch of questions on the swap, but don't want to come off as "one of those guys", so I will start by saying Hello :canada:

so here are a few more pics. Another shot of the truck(Charlotte my wife & I called her)
The frame, a 1992 S10 2wd 117"
and the donor 1981 camaro. I'm kind of sad to be parting out this Z28, I drove one back in high school...actually met my wife while driving one like this, but it's for the good of the cause.
It has a 400 SB. The guy told me it was a 400 tranny, but after closer inspection of the oil pan, it looks more like a 200.

I have a couple big questions that I can't seem to find answers to online.
1: will the Z28 drive shaft work when transferred over to the S10?
2: will the rear diff just bolt right up with no modification?
3: will I need to beef up brakes/suspension with the extra engine weight and additional sheet metal?

Re: '51 1300 attempt at restoring

51Charlotte,

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for the kind words on my build (Atommik). As far as your questions go, I think your s10 may have been a 4cyl. I looked back at my pics and the original motor mounts on my s10 looked different and mine was a 6 cyl.

I would say that the Z28 drive shaft will be too long. I don't know for sure but that would be my guess. I reused my S10 2 piece shaft and shortened the front section by about 3 inches.

As far as front suspension goes, I left the S10 front stock. The motor that was in it weighed about the same as my 327. Some guys do add a front sway bar though.

Enjoy your build, and I will be following along.

well, I have the frame stripped down to bare metal, and POR'd. Now to switch out the rear diff, and clean that up.

So this is Charlotte. Glad to meet you and Charlotte. I like that name. Clarance J is my trucks name. Funny how we genderize them. I'm new to this forum also 4/13. Looks like you're off to a good start on this build. Yup, it looks like a transmission. Good luck with your project.

Earl

well, the Camaro diff has been welded and mounted up under the S10 frame.
I'm still trying to figure out what to do for shock perches. Whether there is something out there at the junk yard or make my own.

cab mocked up, but it's tough to tell exactly how it will sit because the floor is so badly rusted out on the poor girl.

Re: '51 1300 attempt at restoring

Belated Welcome to you! Wow I can't believe I never saw this build before now! I am also using a Camaro drive train (1984) and S10 chassis (1994). To mock up my cab I just set it on some 4 X 4 wooden blocks, Actually the measure 3 1/2 X 3 1/2. I built my own mounts but plan on using the S10 cab mount bushings. What you've done so far looks great. I just got my front end rebuilt and back into a rolling chassis. Can't wait to see more. I'm subscribed.

Re: '51 1300 attempt at restoring

I believe I used your mount drawings for mine. I tried blocking but the floor is literally that bad.
A good friend of mine is going to do the sheet metal work in trade for some custom airbrush work.
This has been a fun slow process. I'm learning as I go from books and the net.
One step at a time I guess.
