p;ost a pic of your wheels so we know where to start

sounds like you need to start with an acid then polish from there I have had great luck with Flitz but I hope you have time if you want them to ook like a mirror

Oh and keeping that way will get intreting too

Seeing the condition of the wheels would help.

as far as starting by cleaning the brake dust i gat a product from the autoparts store called "no more dust" wae wheel sprayon a lite touch with ultafine steelwool on the really tough stuff and rinse off and that solves the brake residue problem
i'll then start with a rough cleaning with brillo soap pads, them rubbing compound then a quality billet polish

it's lots o work the easymans wway is drop off at polishers and pickup a few days later

You can always step the sandpaper down, start with a 600 grit, go to 1500 grit, and then finish with 2500 grit. Always use wet and dry sand paper and use WD-40 as the lubricant for the paper to keep the pores of it clean. Follow the sanding up with a small buffing wheel in a drill using a polishing stick. Harbor Freight or Sears have these available. Final polish with Mothers or Mequiars.
