Ultimate 1969 Pontiac barn find

Well, it is to me at least, because I'm into the Canada-only 2+2 models. And I found the holy grail of them:

1969 Pontiac 2+2
L36 427/390 Astro Jet engine
Muncie Four Speed
12-Bolt w/ posi
Ragtop
Power Windows
Disc Brakes
F41 HD Suspension, Rear sway bar, etc
Red stripe tires

The beautiful thing is that GM Canada can document these cars from the VIN, so I know exactly what it is. I worked with them and it's either one of one or one of two cars ever made: possibly the only 427 four speed ragtop.

I've known about the car for more than 10 years, but the current owner was going to "restore it one day". But he's in his 70s now and is considering selling it to me. The only catch, and it's a big one, is that the cowl tag is missing because it was removed to acid-dip the body. He started a restoration (more on that later) and thinks the tag is with the car, but no one has located it yet. I won't do it without the cowl tag (Canada tags aren't reproduced either).

The car is stored inside a truck body (one of ours, I'm told, with a 366) on a farm in the woods way up in Northern Alberta, Canada.

He still has the protecto-plate and the original owner's name is pretty unique, so on a lark I tracked him down through the Elks club up there - spoke to him briefly. He's in his 90s, pushing 100 now, and wasn't super informative to talk to but it was still cool to talk to the original owner.

It's a total basket case, in the literal sense of the word: the car was totally blown apart for restoration, the engine rebuilt 10+ years ago, the body acid dipped, and the parts all in boxes.

Not many people are into these cars, but for those that are, it's a Hemi 'Cuda convertible and L88 all rolled into one. That's what makes it worth restoring, but it'll be a heck of a challenge. I'm pretty sure I'd need a complete parts car or donor to make this project work though, and space is at a premium, so it'll be tough.

I made an offer, contingent on the tag showing up, and we shall see what happens!

My "clone" car is in Hemmings magazine this month:

...but this one is the real deal and a ragtop to boot.

That is a super rare car for sure. Hopefully he can find the cowl tag and you can get a deal made!

I figured you have been up to something after we met. Funny how instinct works.

I look forward to your doing it on this one. PM me when you have time. I had a good friend up when I grew up and his dad had 3 Rivieras up in the attic of his house!

I know he is still around.

Crazy, I used to have a few Pontiacs, Read an article about early 4 speed Gran Prix that the Pontiac history buffs could not agree on what console was right. I bet you have one pictured. Good luck on your project

Well, just an update. I finally bought the car! Don't have it in my possession yet, still working through the logistics of the cross-border shipment. But on paper, I own it!

I started a blog on the story of the find here: http://1969Pontiac.blogspot.com

Do you want to part with the "uber rare" ceiling fan option?

Dave, nice write up on the car. That is very interesting. How many others 2+2's do you have?

Re: Ultimate 1969 Pontiac barn find

Thanks! I have a "tribute" black one that actually started life as a Laurentian. It was featured in Hemmings not long ago:

https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/mu...e/3750916.html

As for real 2+2s I've had a blue coupe, a red convertible, but I've never had a real big block car before this one!

Cool story, just goes to show how much time and effort a real car enthusiast will go to land his dream car. I'm looking forward to some pics when you finally have it in your possession.
