Squealing at 60 mph

My 71 chevy squeals at 60+mph. Is this due to too high of gears or something more serious?

Too vague of a post to answer realistically.

Where is the squeal coming from exactly?

It's probably a loose fan/alternator belt.

Checked the belts and the whole engine was gone through last year. It only happens when I push past 60 on the highway. I cannot replicate the sound otherwise to hear where it comes from. I think it is the gears but wanted a confirmation or denial.

Do you mean it's a high pitched "whine"??? That could be gears... or the transmission...

My truck only squeals when you sneak up behind it, and pinch the rear bumper...

I guess it could be a whine. It gets louder the faster I go and quieter when I back off the gas...

Check the basics first like tranny fluid, and diff oil.

Could also be tires. One of my other vehicles has aggressive tread tires and they whine at certain speed and on certain pavements. Rear axle gear noise is a common problem with some trucks (mine included) and also tranny gears.

No sure way to identify it other than checking to see if the noise comes and goes when you let off the pedal. If it's tires the noise doesn not go away when you let off the pedal. If it's rear axle it will ease off. On the transmission, you can usually put in neutral to see if it stays or goes away.

Do some experimenting and see if the noise changes by doing the above. Maybe even go 60+ going downhill and let off the gas.

Could be a lot of things. From your history I'd say a good bumper to bumper inspection is needed and would be a good starting point. Do you have the service manuals for it? They can be downloaded here at this link.
