What crate motor do you have?

Looking at crate motors and power. What's in your C-10?

Thanks,
Heath

Im thinking of ordering a 190 HP long block for my 72 ,it has a 100,000 /3yr warranty and thats cheaper that I can have mine rebuilt .And this is from the local Chevrolet dealership for a little over $1450 delivered .

I like that idea as well. But was looking to get more horsepower.

Wait, did you mean the 290 horse?

I am going to be getting a 350hp sbc long block from a local shop for $1300, 7year 100,000 mile warranty at the end of the year. Local builder 17year experience builds these all day long and whips them out.

I was gonna get the 290hp 350 till I saw that on CL. I called him and he can either build me one he already has or rebuild my motor for same price.

I bought the 260hp 350. I put it in the '69 Burb and it doesn't have any trouble hauling that boat around... $1650 delivered to my door.

Look thru the GM performance catalog.I saw a factory 383 listed a while back.Plenty of torque and HP.Used a new block so it could be bore 60 over if ever needed,IIRC the stroke was 3.80 to get the 383.Now if they would just build it in a Ram Jet....

I've been super satisfied with the 330hp I have in mine. After 10 years it still runs like brand new. Doesn't burn any oil and doesn't drip it either. Oh, and it goes like hell! I'd love to have some better gas mileage, but I'd also like to be handsome and rich. Guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Re: What crate motor do you have?

I picked up a Blueprint Engines 383 from Summit. Came crated as shown. All I needed to do was add a flywheel and accessories. It also came with a dyno sheet showing 407 hp and over 440 lbs torque. No need to break in cam. Paid $4100 on sale. I eventually swapped out the Eddy 750 for a Holley 670 Ultra Street Avenger, added full roller rockers, new valve covers, ceramic headers, and a March serpentine pulley system. I'm very happy with the setup.

With that said, I will say this is my second engine. The first had a problem and BP replaced it. They didn't reimburse installation because I did the install myself. Had it been installed by a shop they would have covered the cost.

I've got an advance auto parts crate 350 in mine. It powered my 67 Camaro for years and now its in my truck. Still running strong and I think it was about $850 bucks when I got it. If I were to get a new motor for it, I would think seriously about that year one motor. 3 grand for 400 hp is pretty good.

I got a ZZ502 for mine from the local Chevy dealer. Spent a lot more than the guys in previous posts, however, I am very happy with my choice.

That sounds like a great deal. I would choose a hand built one over an assembly line machine built crate engine any day.

I'd take that drive for quality like that.

zz454 12,500 miles so far so good. If you like torque, go big iron.

Late model vortec from GM Performance parts. I cammed it, changed out the valve springs, and am running a Edelbrock Performer junior intake and Quickfuel 650 Provac carb. Purrs like a kitten, and has waaaay more power than the 250 it replaced.

I've got the RamJet 350, minus the fuel injection.

The PO couldn't figure out how to hook up the fuel injection components, got mad and threw them in a dumpster! So it's got a basic Eddy performer RPM and 1406 carb. Makes great HP & torque. Specs out a few ticks shy of the zz4 according to the GMPP catalog. Would love to find all of the fuel injection parts to put it back together.

Catalog put the price at $6.6k if I remember right.

I can't throw a rock without hitting a ZZ502 in my shop. But if I was doing it for one of our trucks, and wasn't going to race it, I'd go with the HT502 or whatever GM now calls the "truck" version. Milder cam and cheaper, easier to live with.

The 572s are tempting, but really expensive, and too much cam and carb for a grocery getter. If they sold it with street heads and cam, it'd be cool.

I've probably got $5K into my original 396, which surprised me... that's close to new engine pricing. But then it cost $3K to get the rear end "back to new", so nothing's free.

Here's a pic of a crate ZZ502 short block I run in my '69 Camaro, though everything from the deck upwards is custom or aftermarket (but the ZZ502 bottom end seems indestructible). Next to it is the ZZ502 in my B-body, so as you can see it's all in how you dress them!

Re: What crate motor do you have?

I'm at the same crossroads as you. My 72 c-10 still has the original 350 and i get 12 mpg with an embarrassing amount of power. Tried a different carb but it seems to still struggle plus it leaks oil bad. I suspect burnt valves but i'm far from an expert. Time for a new motor. If i'm going to get 12 MPG, i better have some power

I'm thinking of getting one of these. Very good bang for the buck, one year warranty.
