Anyone "dulled" a new brake booster
 

Bought a new booster from inline tube for my untouched 72 K10
and it's to shiney and new looking..
Anyone ever try to dull one down some with ???

Dulling the gold anodizing is easy to to with some 000 or 0000 steel wool, but there goes the protective layer. It is very thin and steel wool will break through without trying very hard. It will be dull after a light scrubbing and then more prone to corrosion.

You might consider using a light misting of a semi gloss or flat paint. Maybe a flat brown or gray, thinned beyond normal and slowly applied in very light layers while keeping the gold color showing through...or a matte clear by itself. I have not done this, but if it works you have added some protection and not lessened it. If it does not work for you, you could then scrub it off hence dulling the platting and then clearcoat with a matte finish.

A couple heavy coats of gloss clear followed by a very light sanding or steel wool could keep the gold color, add protection, but add a haze to the paint hence dulling the appearance.

I don't mind the shiny gold look. I really wish I had shot some paint on the Master Cylinder when I put it on 3 years ago. Now it's gotten rusty looking. I was afraid brake fluid would dissolve the paint. But it's ATF that hobbyists use to strip enamel off plastic traincars without harming the plastic. Not Brake Fluid, necessarily.

If you haven't mounted it yet I would try some matte clear on someplace like the back or bottom of the booster that won't see if you don't like it.
I suspect the booster is coated with yellow zinc. It's really thin and any amount of sanding could go right thru to the bare metal underneath.

Just leave it alone. Mother Nature will take care of the shine soon enough.

Try some degreaser. It seems to dull most shiny metal.
