Bench Seat Foam

I have 70 C10 and just ordered new seat foam for the bench seat. With the new foam in place, my head is 1 1/2 inches from the top of the cab. Has anyone had the same issue with this? If so, how did you fix it? Did you take a couple inches off the bottom? Any info would be helpful.

Re: Bench Seat Foam

You probably have a spring type seat and adding the full foam cushion will make it sit too high.

Re: Bench Seat Foam

Are you talking about coil springs? The bottom has wires running fwd to back with extra support wire on the ends. The back has metal rods running side to side and bottom to top.

Wow, you're lucky... my head was barely 1/2" from the roof after mine (5'-8").

Drive the truck. The foam will "break in".

Lol, I wouldn't call it lucky. I still have a hard time getting my right leg under the steering wheel.

You might want to post a picture of your seat and the frame something sounds fishy .:chevy:

I plan to as soon as I get home. Thank you. It just doesn't seem right for my height. I'm 5'5''

Re: Bench Seat Foam

All I know is that there are two different bench seat frames and they don't reproduce the foam for the base seat. Only the full foam seat cushion is reproduced. The base spring seat doesn't use coil springs, but has these wavy wire spring rods running front to back. Then a burlap and thin foam cover. Kind of like the back rest has.

I see. I do have the frame base with the wavy wire rods going front to back.

Re: Bench Seat Foam

Since you keep calling your truck a C/10 it may be a base build truck which had the spring seat. A "full foam seat" with a lot more foam and lower springs was an upgrade option and included with all optional trim levels. If you have a spring seat that had the thin padding your best bet is to find a full foam seat frame and build on that.

Here are a few pics. You can see in one how close the steering wheel is to the seat. Not sure why the pic rotated.

Re: Bench Seat Foam

Well... That's the replacement foam fit . Once you install the seat cover it will compress that foam considerably . Where did you get that seat frame from ? The back rest looks like a later model style with no springs and just a foam pad :chevy:

Re: Bench Seat Foam

It was in the truck when I bought it a few years ago. Maybe I'll start searching for the correct one.

Looks like you have the full foam seat frame for the bottom. Can't tell on the back rest.

Re: Bench Seat Foam

Hopefully I can make it work, or find the right one. It feels too weird sitting that high.

Well , I'm 6'2" and 240 , I have plenty of head room on the stock seats .:chevy:

When I was trying to decide whether to fix my original worn foam or buy a repro full foam seat bottom, I noticed that the repro foam looks puffed up compared to original seat foam. Search thru old threads for pics and you will see what I mean.

Re: Bench Seat Foam

go to local upholstery shop and have regular old generic foam installed at a fraction of what the "factory correct" crap goes for

Re: Bench Seat Foam

Well, I like that the foam is firm. So, I'm thinking that maybe the local upholstery shop will trim an inch or two off the bottom. Thank you everyone for your advice. I really appreciate it.

I had that SAME issue. The new foam is to dense. Had to cut it down. Buy the cheaper seat foam if you dont want to get that involved. Odd was to look at it but thats the truth.

Has anyone come across this? I purchased new bench seat foam and reupholstered with nice hounds tooth. Looks Great but foam is so thick I feel too close to the steering wheel for comfort.

These guy's make a seat lowering bracket.

Be warned you have to measure the factory brackets you have as there were 2 heights 5 and 7".

They will lower your seat 2" and you lose your back and forth adjustment.

I had that problem and a pair of these fixed it.

This link might help explain what seat foam will work for your truck.
