Disk brake conversion
 

Where do most people get the disk brake conversion kits for the 70 C10? I want to go away from the old drum brakes. I assume I would need to replace the entire system to convert as well as the brake lines. I need to start looking into pricing as I plan to start work right after the new year.

Had it under this 1970 cst/10 for about a year. Then i switched it up and went with a scotts hotrods complete frontend

No issues with this kit. It was already assembled, IE bearings, seals, rotors, brakes, and caliper.

I did upgrade to a new master and prop valve. The first master cyl i got was bad so make sure you check that. The front and rear circuit ports were straight pipe thread and were leaking.

I got mine from Performance Online, they are a reseller of Western Chassis. Some guys pick the parts out from Rock Auto since they're mostly, if not all, stock parts from 71-87 trucks. It might be cheaper to put together the parts yourself, but I didn't think of this option before ordering mine. Even so, it was nice to have a complete kit so I knew it was all there.

For what it is worth, my son and I are working on a 1969. Found out that mid 70's parts are what was used on his truck. Rotors, Calipers and all that. If you want to change out the spindles and all, I would go with a complete kit. I like Brothers as a company, they have been doing me well so far with this project. I am a weekend warrior, so take it for what it is worth. RR

I swapped everything but the crossmember from a 73-87 c10. I rebuilt it all while i was at it. I also swapped in a 71-72 power brake booster, master cylinder, and prop valve. I had pair of conversion axles for the rear so everything is 5 lug now. I know it's a lot to go through, but depending on the condition of your front suspension it might be worth it. I'm very happy with mine.

I'm still gathering parts for the swap on my 70 C20. I bought a 84 C20 with no engine or trans for $350 to grab the front suspension off of. My plan is to do a full front end rebuild while I am in there. New bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, pitman arm, idler arm, master cylinder, hard lines, flex lines, calipers. I will have to see how the rotors, calipers, and pads look. They aren't too bad to change out afterwards, so I can let them slide if they aren't perfect. I am going to piece together everything from RockAuto using all Moog and AC Delco parts. I was able to find everything on RockAuto aside from the center link, spindles, and prop valve.

This exact thing is on the list for my 67 come spring. Working on the rear section right now with plans to have it complete and the front end torn out by spring so I can clean up and paint everything before it goes back together.

My plan is to go all out and rebuild everything while swapping to disc brakes up front and power as well. I have the spindles and complete steering linkage from a 1973 truck but am seriously considering going to 2-1/2" drop spindles and stock height front springs. Looking online, my head starts to swim on the best path forward. Re-use the 67 center link or just go with the 73? I am going to replace all the brake lines but do I need to relocate from behind the cross member to the front? Who's kit is best (Western, ECE, CPP, etc.) and should I go with a kit that comes with ball joints and tie rod ends? That is appealing to me but I am not above sourcing those parts when I get the bushings and such.

Then I have the power steering to consider as well. Got the pump and steering box from the same 73.

I priced several different sources for a complete kit and Performance Online (Western Chassis parts) was the cheapest and it went together great. Mine came with spindles, rotors, calipers, ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends, brake hoses, adjusting sleeves, and bearings. You can upgrade to powder coated calipers or slotted rotors, but I went with the basic package for $700. Your choice of 5 or 6 lug and stock height or drop spindles.

You don't need different brake lines, they all connect to the short hose at the stock location. If you want to lower it, I would go with drop spindles and stock height springs to retain ride quality. No need to go to the 73 center link, I kept my stock center link and it works fine.

73 box should work fine as well if it's power and doesn't need rebuilding.

When I started working on my 1970 GMC 20+ years ago, there was no such thing as a disk brake conversion. Other then the dropped spindles everything else I used was stock.

Then 37 years ago in 1983 I did the same thing on my 1967 Cutlass when converting to disk brakes. I just used parts off of multiple GM A bodies from 1970 to 1972.

Who needs a friggin' brake conversion? :dohh:
