Re: 1969 C10 SWB Stepside - Big Block project

Thanks for all the compliments guys - I'm really happy with them. I'll get them mounted as soon as I can.

On this truck, I'm going for the vintage shop truck look but just new if that makes sense  Factory original color more than likely, maybe even some faux-tina in places and a door logo for my dad and I. Just a made up shop name and theme ..

Dad and I have been building and restoring old muscle cars since I was ~13 or so. My first car was a 69 Chevelle SS396, original big block car. I was 14yrs old. Looking back I now see that this was my pop's way to know where I was and what I was doing on the weekends. If he could keep me in the garage, he could keep me safe and out of trouble. Then, i didn't see it. Now, at almost 39yrs old and owning 34 cars in 25yrs I completely see it. He tought me everything I know about cars, too love them as much as he does.

My goal with this truck is to give something back to my pop. A tribute to our times in 'Coley's Garage'. That's why I'd rather stick with the Vintage shop truck look. Gray wheels like the 60's look, yet updated to the way I would build it too. I'm building this truck to keep. No question about it.

Just read thru your build while eating dinner, awesome. I`m at my shop with my 27 year old son. We`re here working on his race car, (don`t laugh its a civic), he owns a 2wd S10 with a syclone swap, a 92 fleetwood filled with music .I always dragged him with me from the time he was about 4 or 5, to the race track, car shows, friends garages and even an occasional street race over the years. He`s a good kid all and all and he has good hands. Great to read about you and your dad.

Wheels are 20x8.5 (all 4). Billet Specialties - Dagger.

F - 5.5 " BS
R- 4.75 " BS

Measured my stepper with a Percy's Wheelrite. I have the early rear end housing,

255/40/20 on the front, 255/45/20 rear. My truck will be about 5/7 drop and should sit pretty square, maybe a little rake. I just wanted something different, and vintage lookin. I know people trim the lip of the fender pretty regularly but I just didn't want to get into rubbing situations. If it's too small on the rear, I'll just go 265/50 but I really like it as is. Just enough difference in the 'look' of the tire bead (puffiness) front to rear, plus .75 " difference on the rear lip.

I'm really happy with them.
Later.

Wow! congrats on all the sweet parts and wheels! I love the story about you and your dad. Brings back memories with me and my old man.

My dad had a Gulf station when I was 15-16 years old and knew everything:) he taught me a bunch about wrenching for sure. I lost him in 2003, be sure to enjoy your time with your dad.

Keep up the pictures.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I just need to pick up some lugs and I'll bolt the wheels up. My engine is supposed to be ready in about 10 days, a friend of my dad's is putting it back together. I have all the parts for it now it just needs assembled. It is in the vat right now just to get it clean and ready to go. I had hoped to drop the engine in before I put the wheels on just so I can get the full ride height effect. Once the core support is back on we'll put the front fenders on and take some pics.

I am thinking about painting my valve covers chevy orange and just leaving the 'Chevrolet' natural (As is) They get dirty really easy in the textured silver color. If they were painted nicely it would be easier to keep them clean.

I bought a black distributor cap too. The 'freshened up' 408 will look much better than the first attempt.

Are you guys familiar with the Holley C10? The Seafoam green one? What do you think about a stepper version, gray wheels like the Holley truck just white 68 style top and grille? I'm seriously considering it. Even the engine would have a similar look? I really like that truck.

You mean the So-Cal Speed Shop built Holley Shop Truck with LS3/Tremec TKO 600/9-inch Ford! Probably the coolest non-bagged 67 short wide on the planet! That truck? I bet a few members know about this truck.

IMO if you can handle the no frills down to business statement this truck makes you are definately adding to your original concept!

Yeah I like the idea!:four:

Might be an easier color to paint for my first all over paint job too. I'm considering it, no doubt. I might do some photoshop and just see what it might look like with a white grille and top. That green looks good with the gray wheels IMO. Kinda like Nate's truck color I guess ?

I say go for it, I really like that color green. It would really fit what your trying to do with your truck. Those wheels look amazing, I'm jealous.

Just messing around a little today, currently working on my fenders and hood. The hood is really nice it just had two small dings in it but they were right on the ridge part of the hood. Kinda tough to get out but Dad and I have them 99% flat. I think a little Icing / Glaze will make it perfect. The fenders look great. I'm really happy with them. Our goal is zero rust in this truck and as little filler as possible, just what it takes to get it super straight. They both had some small places on them but some dolly work and they're gone. :metal:

We put my new wheels on .. keep in mind there's about 1000 more pounds to go on the front end soon.. It should go down quite a bit. Front clip, radiator / core support, etc.

I also met Johnathan (VA72C10) over the weekend and some buckets followed me home. He is putting a console together for me now, I should have it in a few days.

It's coming together. .. more to come soon. I'm supposed to get my long block back next week sometime. :chevy:
