1986 C10 Project "Winchester"

Here's a nice 86 that I found in a small farm town way down in southern Tn. Originally sold in Georgia but spent most of its life in Winchester Tn. The truck has had a lot of updating already so the "bones" are good but it needs some modern touches. The paint is corvette Marlboro Maroon Metallic and in good shape, built 350 with 400 trans. So the plan as of now is a new 4.5/6 drop kit, tires & wheels, freshen up interior, new carpet & mats, 3 stage buff and new cab trim. I'm ordering the parts this week and I'm planning 2-3 week completion.

You find some of the best samples of trucks to start with. Really enjoy watching your process of updating these trucks. We are trying to do the same with my son's '84. It just needs some TLC to be a really good truck.

Thanks aggie. My time is my limiting factor with the trucks. With 2 young kids including one that plays travel baseball, I have to buy trucks that are in good shape to begin with. But its getting harder each time to find good trucks.

She's a beaut, Clark. I'm sure it'll turn out high end like your others.

Tim, no high end stuff here but I think I can make it a nice driver for sure. My lowering kit, wheels & tires should be here by the weekend. I'm ready to get started.

You going to use crown suspension again or go back to McGaughys?

Re: 1986 C10 Project "Winchester"

Yes sir I am. I really like the complete flip kit they sell and I combine that with my homemade lowering blocks for the 6" rear drop. This truck has belltech 3" spindles that I'll reuse with a new coil spring.

I kept putting off buying this truck. Went back to my saved folder to call today and it was sold. You got a good deal on what seemed to be a super nice truck! Good luck and I look forward to seeing the progress. I'm off to find another now! Lol

Thanks for the positive comments guys. I ran into my first "glitch" this weekend with the truck and I may change my game plan a little. The truck currently has belltech 3" spindles up front and hangers / shackles in the rear. But after doing some measuring and careful inspection what I found is the front coil springs are trimmed about 1/2 around and the rear overload springs were removed to give the truck about a 4/5 drop. I'm good with the front given the truck has full length headers but I'm torn on the rear. I have the parts to change it to a 6" drop but is it worth it. Even though I have a buyer already lined up I'm afraid it will drive me nuts if I don't drop it some more.

I'd say if you have a buyer lined up, send some pics of the current ride height and see if they want the extra inch. I'm always torn about which I like better for the stance, when the truck is level or when the wheel gap is equal front to rear.

Jeeez Bobby, I'll NEVER get another shot at buying one of your projects if you sell them before you build em.

Desert, if I had 5 trucks ready to go I have a buyer for each one right now. My personal time and finding good trucks is the issue, I have plenty of buyers. My goal is to do 3-5 trucks by spring but that may be a pipe dream. I haven't forgot about you and if I find what your looking for I'll let you know. Thanks

Since you have the new wheel/tire combo on it, roll it outside, snap a few pictures and send to the buyer you have lined up. If he/she approves of the stance, then you know you are good to go on that part of the process. From what I can see, it looks good to me.

But do you? You’d have to put the stock shackles and hangers as well as overload back in to use your flip kit and blocks and still achieve the 6” drop.

Quick Saturday morning project, new carpet, floor mats, and a thorough detailing inside. I’m still waiting on a new gas pedal to replace the goofy one in there now.

What did you decide about suspension?
