Project: Crew'd Attitude

Well, finally today I said "F-it". Made time out of my schedule to go and pick up my dually that should have been home months ago now.

1989 Chevrolet Crewcab dually
2wd, 350 TBI, 4 spd standard
4.11 gears and 167,000km

Truck was originally bought by CP Rail and used by an elderly man who was a forman at the time and just used it as a run around truck and so forth. Baby'd it from what I am told. It then was purchased by a local potatoe farming company and fitted with a service deck. It spent the rest of ít's life running to the field, and a bit of hiway usage, hence the original body condition/panels. Was originally an orange color (cp rail), but got a fresh coat of white when it was last purchased. Know the guys that did the servicing on it regularly and was well taken car of...or as well as a work truck can be anyways.
Got a new long block 2 years ago, and dropped a gear out of the original 5 spd. A donor truck they had in the yard gave up the 4 spd currently in it. Will be changed back but for now it's all good.
My buddy had given me a heads up that they were retiring it around a year or so ago now...maybe longer. So I said I was interested, and 2 months ago he called me up asking if I still wanted it....."hell yeah" I said, "how much". Informed me that his boss told him to offer it to me for $1200.00 cash...............needless to say, as of today she is at her new permanant home.

And....today as well I made time during my trip home to stop in at a buddies place in which I had spoken for a dash he had not used in one of his projects from the past. Steel dash and gauges from a 1959 Impala. I'm thinking I found just the place for this!!........muahahahaha!!

Future plans at this point.....though will change I'm sure of it.

-frame rails shortened 14"
-short box fleetside box installed
-dually fender reinstalled on short box
-make a short stack out of the rear spring pack
-axle flip
-drop spindles
-59 Impala steel dash (plus metal work)
-skin my 98 cowl induction hood and form it to the original hood (plans may change...head idea thus far..lol)
-91 GMC Jimmy grill/headlights etc (already found)
-91 Suburban exterior mirrors (need to find)
-NV4500 transmission swap
-Bonneville leather 12 way buckets X4
-sheet metal work interior/console etc.
-custom stereo
-either carpet or line x the floor after sheetmetal work (tempting)

...I think that might be a good start...hahahaha.

Cool idea's welcome. 8)

Looks like a good start, and you don't even have to shorten your box. Should be fun to watch you build this bad boy. Oh, go back to the orange. I love it!

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude

Well, been a bit and plans have changed a slight bit since my last post.

The new plan still involves the same truck, but dragged home another crew cab frame this time in a 4x4 version. Plan on building a crew cab short box 4x4 now. It will have a linked suspension on bags, run around a 38" tire on 20x12 wheels, 14B FF rear, Ford HPD60 up front, newer NV4500 transmission, NP241 or 205 case, and a 12V cummins power plant. Will still get a complete sheetmetal interior I hope.....

Also have an 86 burban showing up for a fuel tank, complete power option package, wiring, AC, etc. Really nice door panels to.

I'm thinking either the factory old 73-74 green, or the new Hyundai Genesis green with tan interior. Bonneville buckets front and rear, and custom bumpers, bed cage, etc.

....probably selling my 98 SAS project once it hits 8LUG magazine, or maybe trade for a nice 66 or 70 Chevelle.

will post up pics soon, cutting the frame this week.

Any updates??

Devillusion 12-12-2010 01:32 AM

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude

I guess a few, but no pictures yet....lol

Got a 91' suburban front cradle and grill assembly (the nice one), have an 86' suburban 3/4 ton fully loaded showing up for parts (full power group, tinted windows, interior goodies, a/c, single wheel conversion parts, rims/tires etc.)

Been laid up after a stomach surgery for the last month, supposed to be headed back to work on the 21st, so hoping I can start doing some light stuff this next week or so. Have to see what the doc says.

Also have a line on a set of 16x10 factory steel wheels....thinking of doing factory steelies up front, wide out back, lower profile 16's but nothing crazy, patina paint, etc. Also have my shortbox supposed to be showing up any bloody day now...or it had better be. Guy has been promising to deliver it for over a month now.

Will get some pics when I can....

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude

Well, here is the "more a less" plan for now (unless I change my mind again)..lol.

Plan is now to keep it 2wd, 1 ton driveline, static drop to begin with, keeping it 8 bolt, factory steelies up front 16x7 and factory looking steelies out back 16x10 with a lower than normal profile tire (unsure of profile yet).

Shortbed (obviously), 91 suburban grill assembly, bonneville buckets front and back, and either patina paint, or a very heavy metallic/pearl white.

I'll leave it at that for now, cause as of lately after reading threads and gathering information my new project has changed with every day of the week...lol. This should be pretty much it other than wheel choice may vary but we'll see.

no worries we all change are minds

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude

Some thoughts on wheels......constructive opinions welcome.

I am still kind of on the fence, I really don't mind the steelies....but what tires does a guy get that fits a 16x10 without getting tiny side walls (prefferably stay with a 60 series or so)?

But I do like the Fuel Octanes as well, in discussion with the company as we speak if they plan on making an 8" wide version in the near future. And the XD's ain't bad either. Truck would be going metallic white if I go with chrome rims.

...bare with the chops, they were a quick turnaround and need some TLC, but will get the job done for now.

Can you do one for me in drab green and black wheels. I like your other truck so well I think I want to go that route when I finally get another truck.

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude

Well, been a while since I last updated anything on the build.....or lack there of one.

Here are some shots of the dash swap mocked up in a parts burban I picked up a short time ago. Might as well abuse this carcas and get the dash ready for the crew in the near future.

Things are going somewhat smooth, with no major issues yet. Time will tell if it all works out in the end. But so far I'm liking what I see.

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude

Finally spent a few hours tonight and started in on the tear down. Managed to get the doors off and the interior nearly completley gutted in a matter of a couple hours. Floors appear to be next thing to mint, no issues what so ever. Original dash is cutout, and everything but basically the wiring, column and seatbelts are left in it. Will be gutting the heater box next, and removing the front clip to install the 91' Burban front end, full interior power group and harness....then start piecing her back together a bit after some sound deadener and new carpet.

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude

yes, I think so. The only things that might vary are the choice of wheel, and or to keep it a dually or single. I seem to change my mind daily, or even some times hourly...lol.

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude

Well, time for a project/picture update:

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../008Medium.jpg
Managed to get the floors all cleaned up, they were actually much better than I had even anticipated. No repairs needed as of yet and I don't see any need any time soon. Still only one cab corner starting to show any issue what so ever.

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...001Medium2.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../020Medium.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../037Medium.jpg
Firewall cut out and new piece from donor spliced in so that I can have some A/C at some point in the future. Don't plan on laying frame at this point so it was kind of a must for a daily driver with the kids.

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../038Medium.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../040Medium.jpg
Rad cradle and assembly from the suburban swapped over along with harness swap at the firewall. Not bad to do once you've done it once.

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../043Medium.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../044Medium.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../042Medium.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../045Medium.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../046Medium.jpg
Holes located, and drilled for the wiring harness via power windows and locks etc. The pillars have the dimples located there for you for a very basic area to start.

Dash is mocked in place into the crew this time, and with a few minor modifications things are looking pretty good thus far. Have to change around my bracing on the underside as I didn't leave enough room for the defrost vents. No big deal..just hate doing things twice.

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0062Medium.jpg
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0042Medium.jpg
Decided to place some small 4 or 5 inch speakers in the upper dash for a filler when the stereo goes in, or even tweeters for that matter. Time will tell, but either way didn't want some big gody speaker grill mounted over the top of the dash, so this is what I came up with and just mount the speakers from the underside. Will more than likely do the same idea for the defrost vents I'm thinking....

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s.../059Medium.jpg

Got the front leather/power/heated/memory seats mounted in the front and decided to take the leap of faith and bought a second matching set for the rear as well to have a 4 seater plus a jump seat in the middle of the rear two buckets from a newer silverado as a 5th. Rear seats were mocked in tonight, just have to finish up the brackets etc.

I ended up moving the rear seats inward towards the center 1.5" more than the fronts for the simple fact that these crew cab doors really are not that large once you get a seat in there and try to get in and out. Besides, the kids don't need to be looking at the back of my skull when were driving. Might as well be able to see a bit too. Don't think it will look to out of place. Once the windows are tinted I doubt many will even notice. Really didn't want to put that jump seat in....but 4 seats sometimes are just not enough. Wouldn't wanna sit on it long anyways...lol.
