Refurbishing Dog Dish Hubcaps

I managed to paint the yellow bowtie blue for my 72 super. A few members suggested the 'Krylon True Blue' and it turned out very nice. Overall the cap is good for my needs. However, does anyone know if there is a pattern for painting the black on these? Free hand taping is out for this guy. It looks to be more of a satin black then gloss. I lucked out a pair of NOS and the black is somewhat dull on those as well. Thanks in advance.

I don't know if there is a pattern available or not....I'm sure someone could make one, but I just masked mine off. I used some 1/8th" detail tape for the outline, and the used wider tape on that with paper to cover everything else.

I used SEM Satin Black...

I took mine to my signpainter and he painted them with a brush.

Thanks guys. Slikside - is your avatar picture one you painted? If so they look really sharp. Sicklajoie- brush work looks very nice. Cant tell from the picture it was brushed.

I ordered some scotch artist tape. I think its 1/8" - hopefully I can use that around the black edges and tape up from there. Thanks firstowner for the link. Maybe when I have some more time I will try the compound to make a form.

RH, Yes it is, thanks. Time and patience will pay off on this project. I think I had about 6 hrs into each cap, but I had them blasted and powdercoated, so I was starting with a blank slate. I also had to sand all patterns that were painted to let the paint adhere better. My truck is parked outside, but I keep the wheels covered. It's been 5+years, and they look just as good today as they did then.

Perfect example of self-gratifying work. If I had those on my truck as a result of me painting - id be pretty proud. I have the SS caps, so it shouldn't be as labor involved as your white painted. When the tape gets here and I have a free weekend i'll post an updated picture. My luck, i'll get them all done and one will bounce off into someone else's lap.

Trust me, you will be much more careful and diligent when removing and installing them!

I taped a hubcap up to see how it would turn out. Not near perfect, but good enough now I have to tape the other three I guess. The tape pulled a little bit around the center outer ring, but I should be able to touch it up. I used scotch 1/8" artist tape. It worked well and was flexible enough I didn't go out of my mind.

I use this 1/4" 3M tape, it works very well.

Available on Ebay for 11 or 12 bucks shipped.

what is that tape? I can't read the style on the picture. Thanks. I think the 1/4" will be better to work with.

Your cap turned out nice! Do you need to paint the black on the two NOS caps? Couldn't you put both of them on the drivers side- if you're worried about the sheen matching

Re: Refurbishing Dog Dish Hubcaps

Is it even possible to polish out the metal part? Chrome is pretty hard. I always assumed it was either replate, live with them, or the "brushed metal" look being your only options.

So painting aside, can they be refurbished on the metal part without replating at all?

If you were to have a painted set chromed, would you be able to paint over the chrome for the chevy logo etc?

I live back a 1/4 mile dirt road. The truck is on my homepage. It's nice, but i hate to use the NOS caps on a 'sunny day driver'. I'd rather trade them off to someone who has a show piece.

Re: Refurbishing Dog Dish Hubcaps

Crewcab65 - ordered some tape -thanks.
drewbert41 - i would assume you could paint over the chrome - not sure. Im not much of a painter.
Davepl - Im in the live with it boat. My truck is nice, but not a show truck. The rims will probably be too clean for the truck when they come back from the powdercoat shop. I was worried about the black being too shiny so I used a satin. I thought flat would be to dull. Im pretty happy with the shades.

Finished the final hubcap last night. The tape I used is listed below. I used the 1/8" around the black and bowtie and then I used the 1" frog tape to build out from that and then newspaper. I tried the 1/4" but I preferred the 1/8"; it seemed to flex better. It took some time taping them up, but it was worth it. After I pulled the tape, I used an Xacto knife to scratch off any spots that the paint bled. The paint used was Krylon Dual Superbond.

Black - Krylon Dual Superbond Black Satin $5
Blue - Krylon Dual Superbond True Blue Gloss $5
1/8" tape - Scotch Artist Tape for Curves (FA2038) $5
1/4" tape - Scotch Plastic Tape (3M 6405) $13
1" Tape - Frog Tape .94" (1358463) $10
