Got some new wheels: Boss 338's in 20x10 and 20x8.5

OK,... by now you have seen this sweet bagged '68 that I saw for sale in Des Moines Iowa, at the Goodguys event last weekend.
I really fell in love with the wheels. Member "hot trux" was with me and he thought he could get them,... since he is an Eagle Alloy/Boss Wheel dealer.
So Yesterday he called about them and today he had them on his doorstep. (one day shipping from Nashville to central Missouri,... not bad!)

Anyway,... they are 20x10 (6.250" bs) and 20x8.5 (5.250" bs) with the ever popular 5x5 bolt pattern. That's right,... they are out there! But there is a catch,...

The front hub area has a problem. Like the Coys wheels,... there needs to be a little "clean up" on the disc rotor to get them to "seat" correctly. Also,... I'm not sure if the cheap plastic center cap, is deep enough.
With the extremely cheap price of these wheels,... I'm going to try to make them work. (I may even have to machine a new set of billet centers, to get them to bolt on)
We took one wheel out of the box and tried to set it on a stock rotor. The wheel were about 1/2" from seating against the rotor.
I'll keep you posted on my progress.
I'm stoked about this "economical alternative" to a Coys 20" wheel.

Man Keith... those things are going to look killer!!!!

I see the shop truck taking on a whole new look, possibly even the '69. :D

So much for no 5 on 5 bolt pattern....

Congrats on the wheels - I thought I read that they weren't going to make a 20" , but apparently they do! I am watching this thread as I haven't decided on wheel for my 68 yet.

These or the Coys probably?

It's not too late to call Stan @ ECE and get some 5-lug rotors and axles coming for your truck,... :metal:

I think spacers would be required too make the 20x10's work on the "narrower" '69 rearend, though.

How do you think these would work on the No Life '69? Would it be too low?

I pulled the trigger on this deal pretty quickly. Plus they aren't on yet.
I'm planning to freshen up a 454 for my red '69 swb truck project,... so there is no "tire money" yet.
I originally bought these for my '86 Dropmember Project,... but they could end up on my '69. ;)

Probably. I plan to run 255/40-20's and a 295/40-20's. (most likely Toyo Proxes) I think they would be too tall to run with my 5.5" static front drop and keep the inner fenders.
I think they will go on the '86.

Do you think they will work with the narrower rear on the 68'?

I plan to go with 2.5 spindle, 2" spring and converted disc on 5X5, you thing that would fit?

Thanks again - love the rims.

6.250" backspace is too much. I'm guessing a 1.250" spacer will get you to a 5" backspace. This should work better. But I would measure first to be sure.

It would be close with a 27" tall front tire. Are you pulling the inner fenders or keeping them?

I hope to find out in the next couple months. But without tires,... I would just be guessing.

I've seen the opposite.

N2billets red 68 Lucy was bagged w/2.5" dropped spindles. He ran 20x8.5's & a 255-40 w/buzzing only @ lower air settings. I bought a similar pkg for my 68 & thought WTH, I'll run them on my 74 for a little 'change'. They were positively a 'no-go' on the 74 @ roughly 5.5-6" front drop (static drop w/3" spindle & 1-coil removed). They buzzed the tops of the inner wheel-wells just poking down the alley.

I should clarify,... the '86 will have no inner fenders and a Dropmember.
(My 5.5" static drop is on my '69 swb beater)

Ok Guys "WARNING" These wheels are not for the faint of heart!!!!

I just bought these for my 66 burb. The good- They fit and look great on the rear. The Bad, (I do have disc brake conversion.) In order to make these fit on the front the snout of the rotor will need to be machined down, and not just a little! You will need to find someone who can cone the end of the hub to fit into the two step downs in the wheel , then the fun begins, you will need to trim the spindle down as far as possible and re drill the cotter pin hole. Then you will need to cut the end off the dust cap untill it is a 1/16 from the spindle and then weld a cover (i used a fender washer) to fill the giant hole in the dust cap . next you will need to break off the tabs from the BOSS cap and test fit it over the spindle with the wheel installed, and then silicone it to the wheel, you may still need very thin spacer behind the wheel. If the guy in the pics didnt go through this he must have some other front end like a Camaro or Mustang II. Good luck if you buy these wheels.

Thanks. By the way these are 20 x 8.5 (all 4)

Re: Got some new wheels: Boss 338's in 20x10 and 20x8.5

Hickup pickup,... the '68 swb that I posted had a stock C10 pickup front suspension (bagged).
If I had known of all the problems,... I would have asked him for details.
I was looking on the Boss Wheel website and checked out the "accessories section". They show all the different centercaps for all the Boss and Eagle Alloy wheels. I'm trying to determine if the centercap from a Boss 304 wheel will work. (part#3148-06) These are more "round" instead of flat like on the 338's.

So if anyone has a set of Boss 301, 303, 304, 306, 307, or 308's,... could you please pull the centercap off and measure cap, or the bore of the wheel so I can see if these will interchange. I have sent an email to Boss Wheels,... but have not heard back from them.
Thanks again for your detailed input. This is a little more complicated than the "Coy's cap spacer issue".

The wheels look great. I'd be interested in hearing from some more people who have installed these on our trucks. It does sound like some work is needed. If its do-able, i'd be interested in a group buy also.

Re: Got some new wheels: Boss 338's in 20x10 and 20x8.5

The cap selection may help the dust cover a little but, stock it is nearly 3/4 of an inch that needs to be eliminated and the machining of the rotor will still need to be done. The reason I indicate the cone shape is to keep the streangth in the hub, if you step machine it it will be very thin around the race and may break. Also you will still need to remove any clips and silicone the cap on, there is no room for the clips unless you run a thick spacer. I looked at other caps from BOSS and none will give you enough room.

I am not trying to scare you off these wheels (they are *****en) I am just trying to eliminate your futue frustration after a costly purchase. I paid $177.00 each for mine and was able to do the mods myself.

Re: Got some new wheels: Boss 338's in 20x10 and 20x8.5

What about using spacers on the front? It sounds like a lot less hassle than stated above if they will work...

Hickup pickup 07-09-2009 08:03 PM

Re: Got some new wheels: Boss 338's in 20x10 and 20x8.5

they would need to be nearly 3/4 of an inch thick. plus I have a PB crossmember which pulls the wheels in about 2 inches per side and I have had to trim my fenders beyond the lip just to get them to clear when the bags are deflated so there is not much room for a spacer let alone a 3/4 inch spacer. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is kinda what this website is all about!

Security guy 07-09-2009 08:36 PM

Re: Got some new wheels: Boss 338's in 20x10 and 20x8.5

Have you got any close up pics of your rotors clearenced or the wheel on the rotor without the cap so we can see a little better about where the problem is? I have a '71 with a 4.5" static drop. I don't have a dropmember, so could I get a spacer and get a wheel with a bigger offset? Just curious.

I got an email back from Boss Wheels tonight. They said that they are working on a new cap design,... but it won't be available for 4-6 weeks.
Maybe if everyone sends them an email,... they will correct the design flaws of this wheel.

The problem is they don't see it as a design flaw. They see it as us using their wheels on the wrong application.

BTW- For those that argued with me about these not being available in a 5x5 pattern.....I told ya so...:frog:
