GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

In 2009 I joined this site and started learning everything possible about our trucks. What interested me the most were the numbers. One thing quickly became apparent, there were no good 1967 GMC VIN decoders available. After some research I was able to make a 67 GMC VIN decoder, and used it to help 67 GMC owners decode their VIN's. This evolved into decoders for the rest of the 68-72 GMC light duty trucks. The next step was Model Number decoders for the GMCs. Then decoders for Chevrolets were made to complete the set. All of these were on paper and I used them to help answer VIN questions that came up on the site for the next two years.

One of the many friends I have made here is SS Tim. He encouraged me to revise my decoders into a more presentable format, and post them up on this site. I redid them using MS paint, and then sent them to Tim for review. Tim made a couple of corrections and had several good suggestions. Together we hammered out the details. We intentionally tailored the decoders to fit the trucks most commonly found on this website. In doing so we tried to make the decoders as informative as possible. For instance a wheelbase length is more informative than a axle to cab dimension, so we used wheelbase length on the decoders, even though the code is actually for axle to cab dimension. Several changes like this were made. I would like to Thank SS Tim for helping with the project, by providing his knowledge, references, time and encouragement.

Once the decoders were finished I thought it would be cool to use photo backgrounds to give the decoders a little pizazz. Pictures of trucks that belonged to members were used to make the decoders even more site friendly. Each member was contacted and they gave their permission for me to use their truck for this project. They even provided large size picture files for the Photoshop process. All of the members were most helpful and even went the extra mile to make sure I had the pictures that were needed. I would like to thank all the members that helped by providing pictures for this project. You all were very helpful and generous with your pictures and your time.
These members are:
1. 75gmc454, 1967 GMC VIN Decoder
2. 68gmsee, 1968 -69 GMC VIN Decoder
3. Bullington, 1970-71 GMC VIN Decoder
4. Dougo, 1972 GMC VIN Decoder
5. Chewychevy67, 1967-72 VIN and model number example
6. Dullayjams, 1967-69 GMC Model Number Decoder
7. Sideways, 1970-72 GMC Model Number Decoder
8. Brian Atckinson, 1967-72 Chevrolet VIN Decoder
9. Dadslonghorn, 1967-72 Chevrolet Model Number Decoder
So here they are, 1967 to 1972 GMC and Chevrolet, VIN and MODEL Number Decoders. :)

Thanks Already Gone, And thanks for saying that they are easy to read. By just covering just the C's and K's the decoders came out much cleaner, simpler and easy to read, while still covering the large majority of trucks found on this site.

Tim, Thanks for the help, having your involvement made this a whole lot easier and accurate. I'm glad you liked the finishing touches. I learned how to do the boarders at the last minute. I think the boarders really complete the look. Thanks again Tim, You Rock!:metal:

KUDOS TO Bruce for a REALLY GREAT JOB!!! I myself spent 1-2 years working on developing this same chart for the VIN's and then became frustrated and set this aside when the business was expanding. My frustrations were caused due to discrepancies I discovered on 67 GMC VIN's used at the Pontiac assembly plant as they appear to be the only assembly plant that used the shortened 7 digit VIN on all 67 models and at the same time I discovered that Canadian VIN's differed and I had no way to double check their info. entirely.
I wish he had reached out sooner to me for help on confirming information on a few things as I collaborated with Bruce very slightly on this project to help him with info I personally had from doing this research and I know for a fact that he has 3-4 years of heavy research to develop this chart. None of this info was readily or easily available prior to now and he did this purely to help other GMC owners to be able to decipher their VIN's easily and accurately so he defiantly deserves our HEARTFELT THANKS!!!

A Tremendous Job Bruce, My hats off to you!!!

Thank You Jeff, If you notice I did the 68-69 GMC Vin grouping a little different. The outcome is the same. The way I did it is more consistant with the model number and the 70-71 GMC Vin Format. I did notice that GMC did it the other way, in the owners manual.

Thank you Paul, Those are wonderful compliments coming from a GMC expert like you. Both times I contacted you with a question you were very kind to answer, and prompt to. I only contacted you after I had exhausted all my other resources, on a particular question. Thank You for helping.
I was wondering if you would like to see where it started? Here is the first 67 gmc decoder that I drew up about 3 1/2 years ago. It was revised several times since then. I just looked the pic over this morning, and counted 8 changes and 2 mistakes.:)

I must say that is is an impressive job that you to put this all together. In the past I just found it easier to decode the GMC vins one at a time as there were so many variations. This is great tool for the masses.

300001 start number is normal for Flint. I haven't yet got all the specifics nailed down on that yet as to what years or why, but I have several Flint SPIDS that start with 300001. The 1971 Chevys started with 600001 and if a second assembly line was used then those VIN's started with 800001. I really didn't have room to list all the starting number possibility's, so I just listed the most common starting numbers.
