"Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side

My last truck to be restored is this 70 SWB 4x4 that I bought off Ebay.

It is a second owner truck, and from Kentucky.

The truck had been repainted and had rockers replaced about 10 years ago.
Other than that it had about 42k miles and was actually in decent shape.
We are replacing the rockers, kick panels, cab corners, cab mounts, and passenger fender pocket.

The young man that had it did not have time or the money to tear it up.....

It is a 3 on the tree with a 292. I would like to find a 6 cyl tach dash, 292 PS bump and brackets, a clean set of vent windows, and a pair of tow hooks to get it the way I want.

We will take the stainless off the truck and buff it out.

Like the others we will Raptor the underside and both sides of the front fender wells and inside the rear wells.

I bought a new tailgate and front panel, and got a pair of rear fenders off the forum, so I have some parts to trade, lots of parts.

I have an offset A/F so we can run power brakes for my daughter. We will rebuild the engine, trans, and replace the seals in the transfer case and axles.

May add A/C if the cost to rebuild what I have is not too much.

Today we tore the bed off and trial fitted the rockers and cab corners.

Since it is raining, we will probably grind the welds in the shop tomorrow and blast the cab then DP90.

Excellent score on the project truck. Gotta love those swb 4x4s. Does it have a lift already or is the suspension stock?

Well we have gone past the point of no return.
Took a perfectly fine driver work truck and have started making it too nice to haul anything.

My daughter started blasting all the small black parts.
We will use an offset air cleaner since we will run power brakes for her.

I need bad a set of tow hooks and a 292 Power sterring set-up.

Don't know if I was more proud of her blasting or trying to paint the parts.

Starting to get parts back from paint.
Will be Medium blue bottom with white top.
We Raptored the inside of the fenders and outside of the front inner fenders.
The front fenders are painted black epoxy on the inside.

I can tell already that this is going to be another sweet truck. I think ill just drop off my truck (well about 500 pieces of my truck) at your house so you can finish it up for me!

Little more progress.

The frame is ready to be painted and blasted, and the 292 is ready for the machine shop. Although the axles are hown, they are off along with the leaf springs.

Looking for a set of tow hooks and a 292 PS set-up.

Are you going to keep it 3ott or make it a four speed? And its a little bit of a drive to gruene hall isnt it.

Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side

Will keep it three OTT.
I have only heard about one other like that in a 4x4, but my other 67 2x4 is OD OTT.
Except for the lift, I want to keep it as close to stock as possible.

I am planning on the Raptor bedliner for my inner fenders, back of fenders, frame, etc. Would you recommend it?

Conroe trucker 04-16-2010 10:33 AM

Re: "Road Toad" 70 SWB S/Side

I have used it n three trucks now a little more each time.

First the inner liner fenders, and hood bottom, then both sides of the front inner fenders, cab bottom, bed and hood bottom.

I would not use it on a frame, there would be no gain and things would not fit well.

This stuff really needs to sit a week to get really hard.
It gets harder with time.

I have not used it inside the bed since my trucks are for show and resale.
My thought is to scratch it up them shoot it on there.
Remember, this stuff is tintable, so you could match the truck color if you wanted.

Agreed regarding the fitment. I have hit the suspension parts and rear end/diff with POR 15 and just the frame itself will get the Raptor. Jeep and off road guys do it all the time so it should be okay. I hit the frame first with epoxy primer. Your stuff looks really good!

Well these are not that good of pics, but we have the leaf springs, axles, frame, and all cross members blasted and painted. All the black interior parts have been painted. Bedsides should be finished next week, and we will rebuild the column and paint it.

Still need a fairly priced set of tow hooks, PS pump brackets for a 292, and a really clean on the column manual shift lever.

This truck will have the radio antennae, Have any of you run a power one? Any ideas?

This truck frame is so clean I don't think it was ever driven in grass.......

Ok a little update.

My daughter feels that she may not be able to drive this truck to high school, someone might scratch it.
I told her it s just a truck, and that several years in prison for manslaughter is worth it to protect your paint......
We have rebuilt the axles, trans, transfer case, 292, carb, and installed new Warn hubs.
Painted the rims, and the unique six cylinder offset power brake air filter.
So the drive train is totally rebuilt.

I am trying to decide if we install and original A/C I took from another truck that is complete with 6 cylinder AC brackets, very rare.

Truck has the Totally stainless engine bolt kit and body kit also, along with the greasable suspension bolts and heavy front leaf spring hangers.
