67 no blinkers or brake lights
2 Attachment(s)
My new 67 I just got, has no blinkers or brake lights. It came with a new steering column harness which I put in. The only power I am getting to the half round connecter is the horn. I do have power to the brake switch, and the flashers work but only in the front. I got everything else to work except the gas gauge. There has been some wires that have been cut and spliced and the wires in the steering column definitely got hot at some point. Appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

If you have an extra one you might try a different headlight switch. Or make sure the connector is completely seated on the one you have. I'm presuming you have tested all of your fuses and cleaned the fuse holders in the fuse box. A lot of them have rusty fuse holder clips. LockDoc |

Check the connection at the rear of the truck. There should be two flasher relays. Mine only had one when I got it and caused issues with rear lights.

Re: 67 no blinkers or brake lights
1157 is the bulb type for the Turn signal/Tail light/Brake lights and Parking light in rear, and Turn signals in the front. Check all those. Check the contacts, and see they're in proper orientation. Look behind the back bumper for the wiring bundle to see if some PO didn't hack the harness for trailer connections.
1967s are different from 68-72s, in that the front amber lights are Parking lights, that go on with the first click in the Headlamp switch, and go out when the headlights come up on the 2nd click. They do function as turn signal indicators, however. [And 4-way flashers]. And you have no side markers -- not even reflectors. Also '67 normal. You may have to pull the steering wheel and R&R the Turn Signal Switch. I had some screwy rear tail light/turn signal gripes on my '67 K/10 Suburban that were cured when I replaced the T/S Sw. |

Re: 67 no blinkers or brake lights
I have already checked all of the lights and replaced the wiring harness in the steering column. My problem is that none of the wires plugged into the half circle harness have power except the horn. Does the headlight switch feed power to the steering column/blinkers? I am going to blow up a wiring diagram and try to figure it out.
Thanks |
Re: 67 no blinkers or brake lights
The headlight switch feeds the tail lights in the back (as well as the headlights, ofc), it does not feed the brake lights. Power for the brake lights comes from the stoplight switch. That is the place to start. Check both side of the plug for power. If one side has power, push down on the brake pedal, and both should have power. If not, you have a bad switch. If no power at all, check the fuse on both sides for power. If it has power on both sides, trace the orange wire to see where it is open.

Re: 67 no blinkers or brake lights
When my GMC did that it turned out to be a rusty connection with the fuse panel.
I used a dremel tool on that thing until it worked. |

Don't forget to check or add a ground between the bed and the frame. I ran a ground from each taillight housing to the frame to be certain.
Nice to see another 503 green '67 longbed in the area! Looks like you got a good one. Here's mine, about 30 miles north of you. |

Nice truck neighbor! Yea it goes well with my Jimmy!
Got it all figured out, everything works like new... almost. |
Re: 67 no blinkers or brake lights
That Jimmy is very nice! Will definitely honk if I spot you on the way to the wineries.

Re: 67 no blinkers or brake lights
A few things that needed to be cleaned up in the wiring. But the main thing was the new half circle wiring harness for the steering column had two different plug in connectors with all of those wires in it. One of them just wasn't making a good connection. Now on to the gas gauge issue , and oh yea and the 58 Harley panhead I brought home today. Just what I needed more bikes! LOL

Re: 67 no blinkers or brake lights
Ground the tan wire on the fuel tank sender unit. With the ignition on does the fuel gauge work? If yes then the problem is either the sender its self or the sender ground wire. If the gauge doesn't work then you have to try grounding the gauge. If that doesn't work then check for power at the gauge. Of course you can do these tests in the reverse order. But these old trucks have more ground issues then power.

I will give it a try. Thanks
