picked this truck up over a year ago, 305 v6 factory 4x4 it sat for many years, it used to have a short bed step side on it just wired on from the farmer, my question is did the make these trucks without bed mounts?, there is one set of mounts but it's is bolted on not riveted this pictures showing no mounts there is not even holes on frame for bed mounts, also found there is no shock perches on the rear axle, it looks original would like to see other truck frames like mine, any input from you guys is appecatied more pics to come!

I think a lot of the older flatbeds were held to the frame with square bend u-bolts...it would go around truck frame and bed frame ...great find!!!

Probably ordered as a chassis/cab. Not sure on a GMC but a Chevy you can tell by vin #
My truck was also a farm "rescue". Glad yours found a good home and you appreciate it for what it is, V6 and all.
Good luck on the project, Tom

Re: My build 63 gmc 4x4 Beastine!!

I agree that it was likely ordered as a cab and chassis. I see the upper rear shock mounts on the frame. It is possible that the rear differential could have been changed at some time during the past 55 years with one that did not have the lower shock mounts.

ive thought that too about axle there is no traces of it ever being one welded to it, the upper mount looks ethey never had anthing through the holes but I have seen one other truck same year with no mounts too, it was a step side, did they make a axle with no mounts on it? it is a 6 lug Dana 44, pretty neat truck I saved from the crusher

Here's a couple of pics of my 61--they changed the upper shock mounts somewhere in late 63. (ron you out there) GMC the same as chevy? the shocks went from like mine to leaning forward. the bottom shock mount is on the spring lift block, not the rear end housing on my 61. could use more pics of the axle.

A pic of the mounts for the bed x-members. the ones with the round hole are cab mounts. these mounts are not re-produced. The cross members are repoed.

Re: My build 63 gmc 4x4 Beastine!!

With the style of upper shock mounts on your frame, there would have to have been mounts welded to the axle tubes to utilize the uppers. Either the rear differential has been changed, or the truck has never had rear shocks.

Captain is correct about the axle mounts. Go to the build section and on page 2 click on Aotte's 64 k10 project long bed. He has done a great job of explaining and posting pictures of just about everything of the chassis rebuild. all the info you need.

well you guys are right, I found a small trace where tgere somthing welded there on the axle on both sides hard to tell they either broke them off it made it look there there nothing ever there, they also welded on spot and clamped a overload spring on the spring block i assume tge shock was in the way of thr overload spring, i was ti get the frame cleaned uo and add bed mounts and quick paint and I mounted the bed I had ,man these trucks are tall from the factory! thanks for your help

Before you replace them I would try taking them apart and clean/ lube with a good water proof synthetic grease. Had same problem with mine from setting too long

Re: My build 63 gmc 4x4 Beastine!!

well got the hubs working ,and went on to the lights, got them all working took apart the turn signal switch cleaned and now it works , I noticed someone has moved the coulum up about 2 inches ,that explains why the wheel is tight against me and they used a hose clamp where the 2 bolts go below the dash , took the clamp off and loosened up the lower clamp and was able to slide the coulum back down to line up the bolts, but now the steering shaft is up still, won't go in, do these trucks have a collapsible shaft? it doesn't look it does, ill I can figure someone has swapped Coloums and now it sits closer to the driver, can I just cut down the shaft when I do my power steering? or is it colapsable and it's just stuck? thanks ill post up some pics

Captainfab 03-11-2018 11:45 PM

Re: My build 63 gmc 4x4 Beastine!!

The '63-'66 trucks do not have collapsable steering column shafts. When installing your power steering the shaft must be shortened. But it sounds like yours may need to be shortened more than my instructions say. With the tube and flange, you don't have to be accurate in how much you cut off of the shaft.

Re: My build 63 gmc 4x4 Beastine!!

where there different lengths of center shafts for the bigger trucks? I'm thinking they had a bigger and truck and swapped out the coulum or.the shaft at least along with the engine to a 305a , but it says 63 by the lever

The C50 and bigger trucks have a totally different steering column. I'm not sure what is going on with yours. What does the steering box look like? Is it the original?

Re: My build 63 gmc 4x4 Beastine!!

Yes it does look original, but for some reason the shaft on the box looks long. Let me look tomorrow at a 4x steering box that I have.

if it was a c and c I doubt that it would have those mounting brackets on the top of the frame behind the cab

Re: My build 63 gmc 4x4 Beastine!!

yes that's why I said there bolted to the frame not riveted I'm sure farmer joe fit the. on , it did have a step side bed on it bit was not bolted down

padresag 03-14-2018 11:26 PM

Re: My build 63 gmc 4x4 Beastine!!

those are for a long bed and not for that thing that is sitting on there. cross sills mount to the frame
there are sometimes a lot of changes in over 50 years. give us the vin nbr as that will tell what it was. i believe someone else has already mentioned about the vin nbr. just that simple and takes all the question out of what it is
ron

Matt's k5 03-15-2018 11:51 PM

Re: My build 63 gmc 4x4 Beastine!!

it's a gmc the vin nbr doesnt tell you anything other than year 1/2 ton k series. wheelbase, and plant, gvwr and serial number which I alreday know, not gonna decode anything else it was most likely was a
longwheel base c and c,.now it's truck with a bed, if only the story's this thing could tell!!
