Hard steering at idle

The truck is a 84 Silverado with the 350. Just recently I find I cant turn or have to REALLY fight to turn the wheel when stopped. I figure the power steering pump is on it's way out because the fluid looks fine. What else should I replace when I'm doing the pump? Is it worth it to replace the hoses too? Any tricks or tips?

If replacing pump, I would replace hoses especially if they may be original. Just a little added insurance to not worry about.

Make sure the belt is tight. They can slip and not squeal or make noise.

2nd the thought to check the belt. They can also slip easier when wet.

I'll check the belt tomorrow, I did notice this after I washed the truck to park it. Thanks for the tip!

So I haven't had time to look in the daylight but I did a quick check after work today and yes the belt is loose but I couldn't see how to tighten it. Anyone got any tips?

most power steering pump brackets will have a place for a 1/2 socket to fit into and help you tighten belt. Usually have to loosen two bolts to get pump to loosen up for adjustment. If you are doing by yourself just hold tension and tighten down on one bolt. Once belt is tight enough just tighten down other bolt.
