71 C10 with Ford F-100 9in swap

From my googling I don't see this done very often; putting the wider 65" truck 9" into a c10. I'm just wondering why? The width is a much closer match to the front track width than the 62" swaps which seem to be much more common.

I just did a 2.5 CPP spindle drop with 2" drop coils in the front and a 5" drop in the rear. I was pretty sad with how far under the truck the rear wheels were. I had the ford diff kicking around and my buddy at the wreckers gave me a nodular 3rd member 31 spline with a factory posi from a Boss 429. So I figured why not swap it, have a posi and correct the track width.

I added a picture mocking it up just to see if the driveshaft will clear with the offset pinion, and yes I know the track bar bracket is upside down.

I just wanted to ask why isn't the truck 9" a more common swap? Why does everyone go for the narrow housings? Thanks

Cost wise the plan is to toss a pair of speedway cut to fit axles in it with 5x5 pattern and do a weld on disc brake kit using the 78+ Metric calipers.

With the wheel backspacing that most people use, a 65" differential width won't work in a lowered truck. Quite often going from the 62" width to the 63.5" width of the '71+ 12 bolts can cause clearance issues. If you ned a set of trailing arm mounts for the 9" I do make those also.

Thanks for the reply. What offset is typical? I would have guessed that if your wheel tucked in the front, then it would tuck in the rear and having an equal track would be ideal to keep the offset the same. Unless everyone is just running staggered wheels? Sorry I'm new to the muscle world.

What diameter tube are your mounting pads for? Thanks

The wheel backspacing is going to vary greatly depending on what diameter and width wheels you are talking about.

As stated in the for sale thread I posted a link to, I make trailing arm mounts for 2-3/4", 3", 3-1/8", 3-1/4" and 3-3/8" axle tube diameters.

The truck is on the road now, here are the parts I used to complete the swap.

Axle Swap:
  • Junkyard 75-78ish ford 9" from a pickup with a big cap 1310 yoke
  • Junkyard Nodular 3.5 Posi
  • Ebay Posi shim kit, shimmed to 100ft*lbs breakaway
  • All Star Performance 31 Spline Long Axles (For the right bolt pattern)
  • All Star Performance Axle Retaining Plates 72317
  • Moroso Wheel Studs 46190
  • Wilwood D154R Calipers with the single 2" Piston 120-14876 (70/30 braking) I found a kit on Ebay that came with pads, fittings and flex lines
  • Basic Weld-On Rear Disc Brake Kit for 1978-88 GM Caliper, 1.59 In BS (These use Wilwood hats with Speedway Rotors)
  • Weld-on Metric Caliper Mounts

Chassis:
  • CPP 2.5" Drop Spindles CP4S3
  • Ride-Tech Front Sway Bar ART-11369120
  • Speedway 2" Drop Springs 91006102
  • Speedway Rear Lowering Kit (Came with shocks, track bar etc.) 91006575
  • T70623 Mirrors. Driver side works well, passengers side is useless.
  • Speedway 58.5" Custom Driveshaft with all yokes and u-joints 1310, balanced (Great Deal!) Swap 1310 normal caps for 1310 Ford Big Caps.
