Re: roll cage question

OK , I have this truck , 1976 chevy luv . I have a ton of Chromemoly and no one to bend or weld it . The ladder bars and rear axle ate built . Thinking of just ordering frame rails and 12 point cage mail order and mig welding it in myself . Tired of promises. A lot of you know I drag race . I have a big portion of this truck in a pile and a good mig welder . Like $1200 worth of materials and a week we could be scaling it . Just about to do it myself . What would ya'll do in my situation . I am not opposed to buying a bender and learning to tig weld , but it would delay racing .

Tube bending and TIG welding are not something you are going to learn in a short time. Especially if you are working with 4130.

Re: roll cage question

I didn't think you were allowed to cert a Chromoly cage with MIG welds. Could be wrong but MIG was ok only in regular steel cages/bars.

Re: roll cage question

I think that tig welding tube is going to take you a bit longer than you hope. I took a 90 hour welding course and only did tig (and tig welded at home). I felt pretty confident by the end of the time. Then you'd still have to learn the bending and coping...

I am all for taking time to learn a new skill but not sure how long you want to wait to race.

This is what I'm worried about and the tubing is 4130 .

You are correct Chromoly cannot be mig welded . I t must be tig welded . If I did it myself I would have to buy a tig machine or build it in mild steel .

Well I will still be racing the yellow truck . I don't think I could get this done this year . Be lucky to have it rough assembled by Dec . and testing by January.

Monday I am going to talk to a well know builder Monday to talk about the project . He is 10-12 weeks out .
