Converter stall for turbo 4l80

Im looking for recommendations on what stall/converter for a 6.0 4l80. Going to be a s475-ish turbo running around 10lbs and using foot brake to stage. Trans is currently getting a refresh and 2wd tail shaft and housing so I want to get a converter for it now too. Built 12 bolt with 3.73 gears and trutrac. I've seen people going around 3000-3400 for stall, i'll be hitting the track often but still will see the street.

3400 minimum for that set up. Put a transbrake in it too

For the last ten years or so I raced I ran Hughes converters. They are in Phoenix. Look up Hughes Performance and go see em. Let them build you one.

What cam? that will have the most effect on converter choice.

Thanks for the input guys, i'll give hughes a call too and see what they say.

Haven't choose a cam yet, and I didn't realize it would make that big of an effect on converter choice. I'll start looking into that now too.

Cam is gonna have less to do with it on a boosted setup. More stall means more "slip" i.e. more time/rpm while on the footbrake. This means you can affect how much boost is being built off the line, relative to where your turbo spools.

FWIW, there are people out there that run stock 4l80e converters (~1800rpm) on boosted motors and claim its ideal. Most of the stuff I see runs the 32-3600rpm range for turbo or P1/D1 cars. There's a certain amount of balance between turbo size, stall speed, and spool time/boost pressure.

I'm familiar with stall, just all my experience is in the diesels. My rpm is much lower but boost much higher when i'm staging, quite the opposite as a gas engine I'd imagine.

I just couldn't see the stock converter being the best option especially since its boosted. Then again this is all new to me so I have no idea. My plan is to run around 10-12lbs. I'll keep doing some research but thanks for the info.

Most of the reputable torque converter builders will work with you on your specific application. They will ask about your combination, etc. The converter builder who built all of mine for my Super class car and other hot rods, had me complete a worksheet that details everything about my engine combo, vehicle weight, rear gear, tire sizes, dyno results/printout (if any) etc.

I just had a billet converter built for my 4L80e that I had to complete the worksheet for the builder. It turned out to be around 3400 RPM based on my combo and what my operating goals are for my truck.

Man, it's a shame you have to cover that converter up with a bellhousing! :metal:

interesting i would have thought it to be less but im in the same boat as the original poster. new to the gas game just started building my set up again hoping to get some time home to actually get in the shop and do some work and take some pics for everyone here. im building a 540 tt truck with a 4L80E stage 5 from rossler 3.00 gear and a 29x15x20 mickey thompson rear tire and plan on running around the streets on pump gas with no more than 15 lbs of boost so if your at 3400 i'm kind of scared where my stall will be at. I guess i need to call pro torque converters and see what they say as i'm getting close to recieving my transmission and motor
