Gauge Cluster Problem
 

I just bought this 99 GMS Z71 SLT 145K mi. and I drove it about a week no problem and then yesterday I noticed my battery light was on and none of my gauges were working then they would turn back on then turn back off did this till i stopped and turned the truck off then turned it back on then they worked fine....Has anyone had this problem?

Anybody know.... now I just turned it on and my gas gauge was fluctuating and battery light was on and my miles kept switching from the miles to zero's...

I have never heard of the cluster acting like that. The more common issue is one of the needles getting stuck or fluctuating. It really sounds as if you have lost or have a intermittant ground issue around the cluster. Something else to check would be pinched wires in the steering column. I have heard issure of a pinched wire in the column causing all kinds of electrical issues.

I had something very similar happen to my 2000 Silverado. All the gauges would go stop working and drop to the off position. I'd only had the truck for a few weeks so it was still under warranty. With mine, it was the ignition lock cylinder at fault.

internal short in the guage cluster, over time youll notice the other guages will start malfunctioning at times,
or too it could be the ignition switch could be shorting as well but my bets on the cluster itself

Wierd part about this its only been happening when its humid or raining....When its nice outside it doesnt do it at all.....

Could be one of the ignition or power relays, I've also seen faulty ignition switches cause problems like that. Best bet is to start checking grounds and such and see if it gets worse or stays the same...

This is where I'm leaning towards. The issues with bad clusters that GM is replacing is in the 03-04 model years and usually is just one guage not working not all of them. I read a post on FSC recently where they were having similar issues and it ended up being a short/broken wire in the steering column.
