Faking the patina makes the baby jesus cry .......

It's cool to see this thread as I mostly been into VW's for years. I had thought( till now )that a small core of VW people only liked the patina ...

Here is the process I used on my truck, a lot less involved and just as good of results. It took me about an hour or two to complete both sides.

Craigslist find with nice patina - maybe borderline rusty.

I cannot swear to it, but I don'r believe that the the cap on the spare is correct either. You should be able to search on this forum to find what the correct caps. I don't recall seeing many 3/4 caps here for sale. It's cool that the truck has a 292 with P/S. I wonder what the story is with the earlier model bed.

Re: Patina, shop logo'd, rusty trucks?

My suggestion is to find a set of something that matches and go with it. When my dad and I restored the truck in my profile pic, I found an NOS set of aluminum GMC caps from an 80's truck for $50 and ran those til I found something closer to correct that I could also afford. A while back I scored a set of chrome caps that I think came off a higher end truck like a Super Custom. I believe that originally the truck would have had painted caps but they are closer to what the truck had new, though.

Included the last truck because I remebered seeing it around town for years, went through several hands, and then just disappeared. Wondered up on it the other day while working about 2hrs from my home town. Looks exactly the same except for the patina.
