Anatomy of a 67 day night mirror.

Bought this mirror locally from a guy parting out a truck. Decided to take it apart and see what's inside. My original mirror day-night lever is broken and the glass is not very good. Hopefully I can make one good one out of the two. Pulling the glass out is a bit tricky. It is glued in all the way around and all the way across the back. The rubber is glued in all the way around the edge of the metal, and is really hard to get off. I haven't got it all the way off yet, actually ripped a small hole in it trying to get it off. This thing was amazingly full of bug nests. It was pretty nasty. I'm either going to send the glass off to be resilvered or try to buy a new one. Anyway you can see here how it comes apart. It looks like I can transfer the lever into my mirror.

One more. The lever is held in by the flat piece of spring metal that I'm prying up with the Allen wrench.

I have never taken a day/night mirror apart. I didn't think we were allowed . So I never knew the magic in making those headlights not blind you is the glass is cut on an angle? I always figured they packed bugs in there and when you switched to night mode they absorbed the light.

Or are they darkening bugs?
Thanks for the write up. Another one of life's mysteries solved.
Great job!

"One small step for implanenuts, one large step for 67-72 forum". It's like seeing the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain.

Please keep us updated on resilvering or whatever route you go.

If you search I believe there’s a shop in Portland Oregon that can rebuild our mirrors.:metal:

Here's a place that does resilvering. I don't have any experience with them and there's probably others:

Here's a restoration source specifically for classic vehicle mirrors. I found this in some of my NCRS publications. Looks like she does good work. I'm thinking of sending her one of my mirrors.

I purchased a refurbished mirror from the Mirror Lady. Very nice piece.

That angled glass is key to the operation of the mirror - when it’s parallel to the mirror you get the full reflection from the mirror-when it’s angled up or down you just get the reflection off of the glass - not the mirror.
