Shipwrights Disease

So... I went to put on a Roof Rack.

When I took the stock rack off my 1976 Suburban, I saw there was some pretty good rust on the roof.
Clear coat has failed on the roof, hood etc.

So I put some Rust inhibitor (duplicolor) from the local auto parts store on the rust spots.

And, you know, while I was standing around waiting for it to dry, I did a small test spot on the fender. First I was just going to touch up the clear coat. But my wet sanding went through the color to the primer!

So... I hit it with some duplicolor and then clearcoat.

Am I a genius or an idiot for thinking I can paint my truck in my driveway with some cans of duplicolor???

Note this is a 4x4 and I use it, and drag it through some brush, so being able to touch up the pain myself would be *awesome!

Hey, man. For a 4x4 driver... do it. What do you have to loose? It looks 100% better than the failing clear. And touch ups would be a snap. I've been trying to decide what to do with my rig (78 K10 Suburban) and have considered something similar for the light rust areas. Most guys in my area want to fix rust by replacing entire panels and a full repaint. Which then means replacing the trim, mirrors, chrome, rubber... gets super expensive quick. And with new paint and trim, I'd hesitate to take it into the brush. I think you have a good plan. Love to see if you'd did any more since you posted.

If you're not trying to show it or sell it, why not?
