very few paint companies still make lacquer paint due to EPA regulations ...

why not use base coat-clear coat?

its not for me its a friend that has a 70ss chevelle and wants it all original including the corect paint

My opinon, shooting laquer on his 70 would be a negative in terms of appearance and durability over the long run. I would also think that resale would be higher if he had a nice mirror finish on it easily obtainable with a good quality BC/CC system in the stock color. Laquer has a tendency to be higher maintenence and, over time, crack and check needing a strip before anythin is applied over it again in the future causing frustration to the owner.

All I can suggest is ask around at your local paint retailers and see if they suggest something. Go to www.autobodystore.com or www.autobodyonline.com and poke around over there too, they have forum sections.

The dude wants his Chevelle totally correct, even the paint. Who are we to recommend that he over restores it to a too shiny of finish?

Tell him to sniff around. There are still sources for guys like him to get laquer for correct resto paint jobs. There is some kind of a legal window that they are selling it to restorers.

I know House of Kolor still sells some laquer products.

i live right outside Philadelphia, and bought PPG black lacquer at the local auto paint store. I didn't know it was becoming so hard to get.

That's it, just to give him an alternative to the old formula paints, using modern paints will be much less hassle over the long run. If one sprays laquer, one will give a 75% chance of having to color sand and buff the finish to create something presentable and doing that will show a super fine surface that was better than the way it rolled off of the production line, why not go with the BC/CC? Just my opinion, I have done this a few times, and been restoring/painting older cars for a few years now as a hobby, laquer is just unusual to be used in today's restoration world.

Just playing the devils advocate.

I have to agree with your friend, if he wants a 'off the line' fresh car, laquer is it but will have to be sprayed by someone who knows what he is doing. He could contact a top name restoration facility and ask there Here is one that does top notch restorations and see what he thinks
