Cheap DIY Electric Window Mod - Plus winder crank switch
 

Hey guys.
I was following this thread until I found out the hard way that it doesnt fit in our doors.... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=601167


The only way I can see it working is by installing the motor on the other side of the regulator where there is a large cavity in the door skin and it doesnt get in the way of anything as it sits below the vent window and is effectively in empty space.

So modifying the bracket in the previous thread (you actually really dont need to modify it that much as its in empty space. Ill post my bracket shape shortly.
I found the best place for the motor is sitting facing directly down but on the outside of the regulator.

Once you have your bracket (I cut mine out of 3mm plate, I recommend this thickness since its a floating plate and will need as much strength as possible, any thicker though and your going to have trouble with the cog sitting out far enough) you need to install your motor on it by cutting out a 32mm hole for the cog and welding a few lugs to hold the unit down (you cant use bolts on the inside two holes as they will get in the way of the regulator cog).
Theres no need to modify the regulator itself other than to take the spring off (although I actually dont think that this is necessary at all..). I also was attmpting to modify the existing crank handle shaft to operate the switches. This is getting in the way more than anything so I went back to the drawing board for a modification.

Oh and ignore the bat**** weld. I couldnt be assed removing the galv from my gap fillers/Brackets so it was a mess to weld with haha.

Last piece of the puzzle for the regulator is mounting the relays.
I welded a tab on top of the regulator opposite the motors (motors face down by the way).
I found this tab was pushing against a random hump in the door so I had to angle it outwards about 30 degrees. (didnt get a photo of this).

Next I had to make a switch, as I said the earlier idea I had in the earlier pic first of all got in the way of the motor sprocket and secondly meant id have to cut into the door.
So I got me some 1/2" washers, nuts and bolts and drilled a 12mm hole in the top of each bolt.
I also cut off and down the regulator spindle. You'll need to measure to work out the correct height taking into account your nut/bolt setup.
I then welded the spindle into the bolt I drilled.

For the switch base I used the lid from an electronics store aluminium box. Note I drilled the top hole before working out where the hole should actually sit with everything line up. Measure once. Once assembled It appeared the protruding nut was going to be in contact with the cog so I trimmed it down. When you work out the correct turning tension for the nut, loctite it down to hold it in place.

Next I welded on a lever then mounted the microswitches.

Attach to the door panel itself, reinstall the window and handle and voila, one ye old window winder switch.


I installed this all this morning. Everything works great. Ill try and post a vid of it in operation tonight.
One thing ill need to add is a tension spring to recentre the lever, the added weight of the crank handle I think will mean every bump makes the windows go down...

And apologies for a lot of the above being in metric etc, thats just how it is in the rest of the civilised world haha.

That's really ambitious...I respect the initiative. I took the easy way out for my electric door windows and went with Nu-Relics.

Haha yah that would be easier but for the same result and only spending $60 it seemed like a no brainer. I'd hate to think how expensive they would be in Australia with shipping too.
