On my 82 truck, it's a 5/16-18 nut (has a 1/2" hex head). I doubt it's metric on a 78 frame. If it is metric (possibly in 87), it's probably 8-1.25 mm coarse threads.

I suggest you get a few of the most common bolts, nuts, and washers for your garage, such as 5/16-18 and 3/8-16 threads, also known as 5/16 NC and 3/8 NC (national coarse) threads. Most old truck guys have cabinet drawers full of them, along with 1/4" hardware, and a variety of washers and lock nuts. Under the hood, many of the body fasteners are 8-1.25 mm.
