Hei distributor canister
I have a 350 small block between 74 and 78 is the year and the vacuum canister makes the distributor cap lean it doesn't sit flush. Without pointing out the obvious do I have the wrong distributor cap is there some type of distributor cap that has a gap or something that allows the distributor cap to sit flush an even without any interference from thevacuum canister? I compared it to the old one that I took off and they look identical I see no difference. but older distributor cap was black and I never noticed if it was not sitting flush or not this new distributor cap is brown and I do notice that it does not sit flush

Re: Hei distributor canister
If the vacuum advance control unit is the source of the distributor cap "lean", more than likely the vacuum advance control is improperly installed. The unit should fit down flat on it's mounting surface. On the rim of the distributor cap near one the screw hooks is a square "nub" that fits in a square notch on the distributor.. If the cap's nub isn't properly aligned and inserted into that notch, the cap will lean...

Re: Hei distributor canister
I had a similar problem with my HEI. All I did was move the spark plugs over by one and now I have plenty of clearance. You’ll have to reset the timing and do it at TDC, but it looks better now 😊
