Value Estimates 1966 C-10 Custom - Restomod chevy 350 updated suspension

Hi all,

I am interested in purchasing a local 1966 Chevy C-10 but not sure if what I am interested in paying for it is too much.

My goal is to buy this not as an investment but as truck to drive for a year or so and then turn around and pass it along with the goal of breaking even or making some money.

I know its tough with not seeing it in person and hearing it but I hope these visuals will help with the description of what has been done.

I think the truck has a pop wow factor, it is a very different truck around this area (Raleigh, NC.)

The Good:

350 with mild cam, Edelbrock Performer Intake and Edelbrock Carb
4speed on the floor
Rear end 12 bolt posi w/ 3:42 gears - brand new
Front disc brakes with 2.5 drop spindles
Cab and bed taken off so frame is sanded and painted (not powdercoated)
Power brakes
Power steering
Aluminum radiator
electric fan
Retro looking radio but modern with AUX out and speakers in kick panels
All new front suspension
New hurst 4 speed shifter
New American racing wheels with new tires
New exhaust
Drop springs in rear
New lowering shocks
New track arm, triangulated rear arms
Gas tank in rear, filler in bed
All new door handles inside and out
All new side chrome new
New grill
New style headlight
New bumpers
Recovered seat
New gauges
New carpet new seatbelts

The Not So Good:

No A/C
Some rust on rear wheel wells in bed (photos)
some surface rust in corners in bed (photos)
inside the cab there are paint runs on roof

He says he has about $22k into it (he bought it somewhat done and then worked with a local shop to finish it.)

I should also update that the photos taken were before the mechanical fan was switched to an electric fan. That made a very big difference in performance on the motor, free'd up a lot of weight being spun by the motor.

i believe the motor in that photo with no bed was a temporary one, it did not end up in it.

Some of the money on his part was from buying the truck half done to begin with and there are receipts for all the work for the new parts.

thank you tinydb84 for input.

open to more thoughts.

Wow, in my neck of the woods, that would fetch a lot more than that! I am hoping to sell mine for $6k -$7k and mine isn't as nice as that one. Either I'm going to lose some money or not be able to sell it soon enough.

Here, I would pay about $8k to $10k for that.

I re-read what I wrote and I can't change it. the cab and front end were taken off and fresh painted and the frame was cleaned, sanded, primed, and painted.

Also all new brake lines were run and hoses.

thank you Blue_Aura as well for input.

Honestly I was thinking about offering him $17k with a max price of $19k. But maybe I should be slapped silly ;)

I have price comped some trucks in this area and ones that look half done, rust showing, motor barely runs and is a straight six or small v8 are going for $12k. Some with great drivetrain and rough body work are going for $8k-$10k.

To me this truck is buy it and go straight to car show. The only place with rust are the parts of the bed I showed in the pictures.

I really wish I could edit the original post:

I also did test drive it and it runs very smooth, handles bumps as good as my 2007 F150. all the bushings and body mounts being replaced and with the front suspension having a big sway bar it corners very well as well.

Can you elaborate more? What do you think was missing in the work done? almost every inch was gone over (the bed was done quickly to save money I believe but by the previous person the current owner bought it from)

This photo with no bed - did you notice that the cab appears to be a big back window? I don't think it's the same cab. I'd ask for an explanation about that.

Thank you Lugnutz, I do know that the shop that is local is working on multiple trucks at the same time for this same person. I think you are indeed correct and the rear window is different and so this must be a different cab. I apologize for that mixup, but from speaking with the shop that did the work I am sure it is just a mixup.

How much money they put into the truck isn't part of the equation. It's really nice looking, but you don't want buyers remorse after you hand over the cash. I found this one just cruising Craigs List, might help put it into perspective: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/3692055480.html. And it's a big back window.

Re: Value Estimates 1966 C-10 Custom - Restomod chevy 350 updated suspension

Thank you ACK that is a nice find. It doesn't have a complete AC, original suspension and ride height, no sway bar, less expensive wheels and tires and then there is this comment that worries me:
The truck shines up well and looks good from a few feet, but the paint is showing its age and some poor prep work. There is some clear coat peeling, and some cracked paint. The truck gets huge positive attention as is, and all the metal appears to be rock solid, so you can drive and enjoy the truck as is or spend a little time bringing the paintwork up a notch.

But the big window is nice

Verify the VIN on the cab AND the frame before you go any further. I the cab has been changed I would look into both VIN's before I offer anything

Good call Clyde, I did look and the two match up. but the truck is definitely not an original restoration with a different engine, updated suspension, updated interior dash and steering wheel and gearing swapped to 3:42 with 12 bolt posi rear etc.,

I am sorry you feel that way, I thought I was being open. I also was trying to be fair in my description and include all information, good or bad.

I am okay with walking away from this one and finding something else.

No matter what you may think I really do appreciate the input and the reasons why so I can learn more about these trucks.

I do have experience buying and selling vehicles, just not as much with classic vehicles and custom vehicles.

Re: Value Estimates 1966 C-10 Custom - Restomod chevy 350 updated suspension

These things are so tough to call. When you're doing a frame-off restoration on a truck, things add up fast. It is very easy to hit 20k without really blinking, and that's doing a ton of your own work. Depending on what you start with, paint alone can hit 10K if you want it to be a nice job.

I'm shocked to see anyone say that they're doing a full frame-off with pro paint, etc. for $10k. They must be getting some screaming deals out there. When labor is in the picture, the final bill can make your head spin. I paid just shy of 8k for body work and paint (full frame-off), and I know I got a good deal from a very fair painter/body man. Heck, I had well over 1k in sandblasting and powdercoating.

All of this being said, any discussion of rust on a truck they're asking 20k for is pretty alarming. A lot can hide underneath a paint job, so a truck that looks and runs nice can have some nasty secrets. For that price, it should be in very, very good condition.

If they had a shop do a lot of the work, I can see how they had at least that much money in it. However, one rarely gets their money back on such a venture. You should be getting a pretty significant discount over what they have in it.

Good luck with everything. Truck looks nice from here..
