FYI: TOW HOOK guide with pics...

Thought i would do this for fun and maybe someone can learn from this. (isn't that what this board is about?). Anyhow, i believe the 67-68 style actually started around 1960. The 73 style i do not know how long they used that style for. If anyone wants to add part numbers or comments, please do. MODS: feel free to move this if needed. Thanks, Eric

Re: FYI: TOW HOOK guide with pics...
nice collection but i have one slight correction---in the G.M. parts book, the 67-68 hooks are listed as fitting 60-68. i have found them on a 65 one ton at pick-n-pull. i can't say they were original or not but they had been there a long time. just thought i'd throw this in for you junkyard dogs, like me, so you can start checking out the earlier G.M. trucks.

Re: FYI: TOW HOOK guide with pics...
pickmup, Many years of looking and some help from other board members.
Jerry, i wrote that they started around 1960, but don't know for sure. Also on the 67-68 style i have seen them with a 6 digit part number and a 7 digit. I assume the 6 digit would be the early 60's? What does your book show? I have also heard that the 72 extreme bend hooks carry the same part # as the 69-72 style... |

The 73 & up was used through 91. He is one of my old trucks, a 91 Silverado 4x4

Here is my set, still in the hands of the PO. His dad was the only owner of the truck, removed them shortly after he bought it and put a monster steel push bumper on. After reading my glove box sticker I noticed that it was an option. Called up the PO and he searched his dads shop, found them and cleaned them up. He is starting a powder coating business and says he is going to ship them to me to put back on his dads truck. I have been waiting for awhile though...(fingers crossed!) They are off of a 68 SWB K-10...
I have seen more pictures of these not installed, than installed. Anyone installation pics to add to the thread? (not trying to steal it away, just add to it) |

As far as I know the 87-9 ?? where all mounted horizontally and stuck out through the plastic air damms. I removed the air damm because you could not fit a chain around the hook.
I would like to bring up the subject of Industrial or Utility tow hooks for the 67-72 trucks. I found a set at a swap meet for $10. (bottom pic is my hooks) When I got them I thought they might be rear hooks but I have found 2 other trucks that show them mounted on the front. I have seen pics if other Rear hooks and the have 3 mounting holes. The white 69 bus is a Craigslist ad I found and the 4x4 utility was a members truck that sold here on the board a few months back. As a note the seller showed the glove box sheet and tow hooks where not listed? Any comments? Here is the sale thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...hlight=utility |
Re: FYI: TOW HOOK guide with pics...
Did you guys know that the only way that the factory installed tow hooks was on trucks with painted bumpers, so no CST trucks left the factory with hooks.
For CST and other trucks with chrome bumpers if you wanted tow hooks you had to have them Dealer installed or buy them over the counter and do it yourself. JUST ADDING TO THE THREAD |
Re: FYI: TOW HOOK guide with pics...
It is my understanding that the hooks in the lower right corner of the picture listed as 73 - ? are the '73 thru '80 style GM hooks. I'm thinking in '81 GM changed to a differant style that mounts to the frame with the hook being at a horizontal position with the hooks facing each other and openings in an air dam to attach tow strap. Used from '81 thru '87 when trucks changed front clip, used also on the Suburbans up thru '91. Guess I need to pull mine off my '91 Burb and get a pic loaded in the computer.

Re: FYI: TOW HOOK guide with pics...
Heres a little more info for ya, the tow hook option in 1971 cost 19.00, not bad compared to the cost a AM/FM radio the same year 148.55.
The 60 to 68 hooks mounted kinda sideways as they do on todays trucks. These are the factory hooks on my cousins 63 4x4 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ntitled-16.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ntitled-15.jpg Heres a pic of the hooks I just took off an 84 I'm parting out. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t/DSCF1684.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t/DSCF1683.jpg |

Re: FYI: TOW HOOK guide with pics...
Sorry, what I meant to say is they mount that way on the 60 to 66 trucks and not the 67-68. If I rememmber there is a large heavy angled brace that attaches to the frame and is also a support for the bumper. Next time I go over there I'll take some more pics.

Look what I found today on an old nasty 72 GMC 3\4T truck sitting in a yard next to hwy167 south of Seattle...I just bid $350 for the last set on Ebay and did NOT get them! I did get these for considerably less. ;) I had to root around in the dirt to get these off, but finally got my hands on a pair.:)
I don't know what the fascination is with these tow hooks, either, but I wanted in on it. You always want what you can't have, I guess. I actually like the looks of the 69-72 hooks better, because they are better balanced. These look like they just stuck two left handers on both sides. They were listed on the glovebox, but I didn't get the number. I didn't want the owner to think he had something special and jack up the price. I noticed and took pics of the mounting holes...one side is mounted higher than the other, probably because one hook points in toward the frame rail and the other away from it. Part of that, "two lefts make a right" thing, I suppose. |

1V7610 - FRONT TOW HOOK
Is what my resto packet gave as a #, but I think it's for all hooks |
Re: FYI: TOW HOOK guide with pics...
Nice score pickmup!
Rob, i do have 3 4x4s listed in my sig. (the 70 blazer also) I am set to put 2 sets of hooks on each 4x4 now. HAHA. I used to have a set of the "bendy" mid 80s hooks like your pic, but i couldn't handle the prestige and had to let them go... Actually, i heard those were bent like that on trucks equipped with the front air dam to clear it. A little more info to share... |
