What do you guys think of these spring type hose clamps of old? As far as sealing and longevity.

I think I hate them and use normal worm gear clamps whenever I can.

I don't like them either, they always hurt me some how!!! I use worm drives and I trim the extra band off and take off the sharp corners.

They work great!
Easy to mod some pliers to use to remove/replace them.

A mechanic friend explained to me that they became into being for better seals. The various metals hoses connect to expand and contract as the temperature changes. These type hose clamps maintain pressure as the diameter changes.

If you ever lived in 40 below country the common practise was to go over all your worm gear clamps not long after the cold settled in in the fall.
Make sure they were tight and leak free for the winter when all things metal shrunk in size.

Having had a worm gear clamp come loose and the lower radiator hose blow off, I have become a big fan of the spring type clamps. Yes, annoying to use but they don't loosen up and cause you loose an engine or if you notice, just leave you stranded.

Jest need the proper tool and they are easier to deal with.

I've never liked the spring clamps either...but what lutronjim said makes a lot of sense...never thought about it like that before..

One other nice thing about wire clamps is they easily fit onto narrow fittings.
Some fittings are only 1/4 inch wide we’re the hose gets clamped.
Easy to put a too wide worm gear clamp right on top of or partly on the ridge.’gaurenteed leaker.
