Mega Crew Cab Mid bed. 7.3 4x4

First off let me say thank you guys for all the extremely valuable information provided. Yes this is my first post but I have used this site as a guide tool for a while. I had a 82 long bed c10 custom in highschool. Rebuilt the 305 and drove it to college until someone made me an offer I could not refuse. I miss and loved that truck more than any car or truck I've ever owned. Keep in mind I daily drive a 700hp Corvette. Well the time has come that I need a 4 door. My family grew over night...don't ask...haha. anyways I have a 7.3 powerstroke single cab that I plan on putting a chopped suburban with a chopped long bed on. I really like the mega cab look so i will try and copy it on a 80 CC/burb. I've never been a fan of the short or long beds on a 4 door. Something about the back doesn't look to proportion. So I will cut a short bed before the fuel door to get the look I want. Let me know what you think of my idea.

Anyone like my idea!? I started the build with first getting the diesel engine running tip top. I changed the batteries, the fuel pump, put a performance HPOP, new IPR, new oem cam sensor, upgraded the fuel preassure regulator. This weekend the truck will go to the shop to have the computer, wiring, idm, and injectors checked. I want to make sure this 7.3 is going to be reliable. I need to remove the transmission to attach the transfer case. I will do that after it comes back from the shop. One step at a time. Wish me luck.

Sounds like a cool project. The cab and bed look good on the photoshop. Good luck and keep posting updates.

On the Hunt for a complete Suburban and bare single cab now!

I like the idea but i would use a gm frame and a 12 valve cummins since it has less wiring and a huge aftermarket if you want power.

This was discussed a little while back and someone posted pictures of a Suburban turned into a pickup. The roofs are different and the Suburban roof looked funny mated to the back of a pickup cab.

If you can make it look right it will be a cool project. I'm interested to see what you do with it.

When these trucks was new a aftermarket company made some crew cab extended cab,Like this http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=332976 something like that with a bed a tiny bit longer.

A suburban does not have much real estate on the exterior behind the rear door. If you're going to stretch it and make a "mega cab", don't add a couple of inches.... Make it worth the while for the interior room.

I would love to do a cummins but i have a complete running single can Powerstroke donor. the reason for using the powerstroke frame is that it's heavyduty 1 ton (I tow). I will need to shorten the frame not lengthen it. The engine and transmission is already mounted; Just make cab/ bed mounts which i would still make on the suburban frame.

Yes, i know about the roof line not being the same. I have a few ideas on how to get it to look right. I will not keep that hump on top. Maybe use a late model roof panel on off a Silverado. Im not sure exactly the plan but it will look factory.

Holly smokes that thing is huge. I don't want it that big. The room would be nice but it doesn't look visually appealing.

To clarify...I meant to say I will cut a LONG bed down in the front before the fuel door.

Thank you. I have to to confess that your truck was the sole inspiration for this project. I want the exact same stance that your truck has. I plan on doing a 08 ltz interior on mine. I absolutely love your truck. What is your wheel size combination?

A long time ago I put a rear cab portion on a suburban to make a mega cab. I got the roof done and then sold the project. I really thought about doing it again to my 76, but it takes more time and my cab is not bad so I'm leaving it alone. It's cool you're using the 7.3. Hopefully you can set the GM body over the PSD and retain all the can etc. I put a 6.9 in my 76 years ago and those bell housings smack the firewall floor right in the center. I had to put a 3" body lift on the truck to get the engine setting where I needed it.

Man I would love to see a picture of that! Yes im hoping everything clears. since I'm going with 35" mud tires I am not to worried if i have to lift the cab a bit.

I bought a solid 1990 suburban and the back of a single cab yesterday. I will start grafting everything this week. I still need the front doors, front end, and a long bed but for now this is a good start.

Re: Mega Crew Cab Mid bed. 7.3 4x4

After I saw your thread a couple of weeks ago, I got the twitch and had ideas to do this to my 76. I think I better quit thinking and just finish the truck. I have a hard enough time getting to work on it let a lone cut it in half, again. :) I was actually thinking about cutting the cab in the middle of the rear door opening and stretching the rear doors 3-4". But I woke up. Haha

Nice work, that looks great already!
