Sport Mirror Template

I purchased a set of doors off of a board member years ago. The holes for the mirrors were welded up. I want to put mirrors on my truck. Do any of you have a template that I can lay on my door to get the location for the holes correct? Sport mirrors on a 71-72.

I think I recall the mirrors are not mounted symmetrically. As in the two doors have different mirror locations.

X2 on the mirror location on the passenger side, a little farther back, if this is not done, you will have the mirror in the middle of the vent window, when looking from the drivers side

Learn something new every day! I didn't know that about the passenger mirror. Thanks for the drawing 54blackhornet!

When you have the door panels off check at the bottom of the door inside. A lot of times the mirrors were removed and they just let the backing plates fall down inside the doors. Sometimes they are hard to see.

No backing plates and you can't get a good line of sight up in the door to see the original holes.

Re: Sport Mirror Template

I'm installing sport mirrors of my 70 C10 and the only difference is the vent windows have been removed and replaced with the one piece window from one piece products.
As per 54 blackhornet's, would it be necessary to move the passengers mirror back the additional 1.2"?
I would presume since there is no vent window you would not need to do this.
Any thoughts/suggestions here?
Thanks

I think I'd do it per factory as a starting point, however, have someone hold it in place and adjust as you see fit. Regardless, you're probably not going to see much. I installed mine per factory, with vent windows, and it's almost useless.

My 71 GMC had about a dozen holes drilled into the doors for who knows how many sets of mirrors down through the years. Funny that both backing plates were still stuck in place behind the original holes. And yes the passenger sport mirror is useless.

If it is because the mirror won't tilt in far enough to see out of it there is a thread on here somewhere that tells how to correct that by modifying the mirror a little bit....

Modifying the mirror or placement of the mirror?

Well if it's any contention Cesar, I installed mine per factory and it's still worthless. And yeah, it doesn't go far enough in.

My 72 originally came with D29 mirrors (painted tri-pods) In my younger years I installed oem sport mirrors per stock dimensions (right mirror further back) many years ago after purchase because they look cool. Agree, they kind of suck for viewing. Installed the DG4 mirrors in my rebuild. Shiny version of the tripod mirrors. My truck is a 4x4 so I think the mirrors look fine. Wish I never got rid of the original mirrors. Though I like the DG4's better.

If anyone has info on modifying the passenger mirror to work I would be interested (maybe a link to the thread). I installed on the door per instructions, and still cannot pull the mirror in far enough to see. I am fairly sure it is an OE mirror.

I've got OEM sport mirrors on my 71 K10 GMC. Mounted in factory locations
Have no trouble towing our holiday trailer. Not a large trailer

Interesting. I guess I need to take another look to 1. make sure the mirrors I have are indeed OEM (fairly certain they have GM part numbers on them) and 2. I drilled the passenger side in correct locations.

My C20 came with factory installed sport mirrors, but the passenger side mirror had been removed, and holes filled, then someone had used some aftermarket clamp on type mirrors for use in towing a camper. The sport mirrors I purchased were used, but in fairly decent condition, and I was trying to stay with OE mirrors due to this very issue. These were in good condition with the exception of the glass, which I had replaced by a local glass shop.

Thanks for the link, and to resolve my issue I will likely modify the passenger mirror to allow it to swing in farther. I much prefer the look of the sport mirrors, and I have no intention on doing any towing, so I doubt I change them out.

I had small mirrors on my 69 that were absolutely useless because they vibrated so bad, luckily the blind spot mirror was rubber isolated so I used to use that instead.
My 70 has below eyeline mirrors which I like the looks of and they work great.
