Metallic-Sounding Drag In Tilt Steering Column When Turning Wheel

I just noticed that there is a slight drag in my steering wheel when I turn it. I don't have to be driving to notice this. In fact, I probably wouldn't notice it with the truck running. I'm wondering if this is a sign of a bearing problem. If so or potentially so, is my only option to disassemble column and lube or replace bearings? Or can I just ignore it and go on? It's hard to describe, but seems to be metallic in nature. Just a little resistance when rocking steering wheel left or right, even before the point of actually turning the wheels.

I have the same thing happening with mine. It's not a tilt but it sounds like the bearing. I replaced my bearing and it didn't solve the problem.

Bummer. Anyone else have any ideas? Especially those that have rebuilt columns

It could be the horn contacts rubbing. My truck made that noise also so I took it apart and put dielectric grease on the contacts. It fixed it for about 3 months and then it made the noise again.

Ah, I appreciate the tip. I'll try that before removing the bearing assembly. I just replaced the turn signal switch too. I hope that is it! Specifically, where did you need to add the grease? I'm still trying to figure out what makes the horn work. :)

my steering column has this too. mine is dragging where the black after market steering wheel adapter cover from grant meets the original steering column. if your running an after market grant steering wheel and adapter i bet that is what it is.

Thanks, James. I just went out and checked this along with horn switch. I removed the turn signal switch and the column sleeve covering the bearing so no interference. I have definitely narrowed it down to the bearing itself. Now if I could just figure out how to get those two pins out to remove the bearing assembly.

One board member mentioned using a socket and screw, but I haven't figured out how to execute that successfully. And someone else mentioned a special tool (something like a slide hammer), but I haven't found that tool yet either. Just not sure what to search for.
