sound system
i am about to put a sound system in a 72 chevy and i want to know what are my options. i want to put in a cd player and some speakers. i want to stay stock- not cut the dash for the cdplayer. what are the other mounting options. in the glove box, under the seat, make a center counsole? i saw some kick panels on ebay for extra speakers but what are other options. this is a nice stock truck and i want to keep it that way but need some sound. some pics would be amazing

Re: sound system
for an easy you can get an amp run wires to all the speaker and subs.
for the input take an old set of headphones cut the wires a good distance away from the plug. there will be 4 wires total, a positive and a negative for right and left. use these wires to hook up to the amp. you may need to switch the leads if you get the positive and negative mixed up. then you can use any portable device to suplly your music and can keep the dash stock. i've done it without the amp as a temporary stereo in my old truck. if you have anyquestions let me know. |
Re: sound system
whats the best place to mount a cd player
|
Re: sound system
I'll take some pictures after I get off school today of mine. My cd player is mounted under the dash just below the heater and fan switches and I have two 6 1/2 speakers in little box type mounts on the floor up under the dash.

Re: sound system
Here's a pick of where mine is.
http://www.slickorange.com/Album/1971_gmc_page4.html I have aftermarket A/C so I just swapped the two, and didn't cut my dash. Just made an adapter plate for my A/C controls to bolt into the radio opening and put my radio in the factory spot. I realize this isn't a good option though if you have factory heat/air. The glove box is an option too. I am sure someone will pipe in with pics and details on that. I have an amp and Infinity 693.7i 6x9's which sound amazing under the seat. I have some more Infinity 6-1/2's to put in the kick panels, but that's going to take some work. I don't want to cut my metal either. |
Re: sound system
I have some really nice seperates with tiny magnets that shoul fit in a kick panel! I sell them for 125 shipped to anyone in the U.S. This is right at dealer cost http://www.directed.com/audio/speakers/default.asp! They are cx650's!You are on the right track as far as head unit mounting! I'd go in the glove box or make a console! You might do a search for glove box radio someone here was gonna make a brkt!
Let me know if I can help! Kevin |
Re: sound system
I put a 3 speaker JBL system in my '72. Made a 1" blocks to raise my bench seat , just enough to instal 2 custom *" subs (not JBL), and space for the amp. since there were speaker holes in my doors already, my JBL 3 way system has; 6" in the door. 4" mounted in the "ebay" kick panel, AND, the tweeter speaker fits perfectly in the A/C round outlets at each end of the dash. crossovers are mounted in the passenger floor board under the carpet up high. the sound is awesome from rock to jazz and I get nothing but compliments. you can buy a main deck that mounts where your radio was without holes that has RCA outputs for a remote CD stacker, and now available, a deck that will accept an iPod

A lot of people put the CD player in the place of the heater controls or mount it inside the glove box. To find pictures of glove box radios, use the search feature and hunt for "glove radio" and you'll find several (most likely). I can post some pics of stuff tomorrow when I get to work. |
Re: sound system
I might be building a bracket to mount mine bellow the heater controls. I don't think the screen will clear the dash, so I am just going to make a mounting plat and secure it to the under side.

What watts are the speakers. Do you have a pic of the grills? what subs would you pair with them? OOPS i just scrolled down and saw the answers to my questions. |
Re: sound system
kelsfine69 is there anything you dont like about it being in the dash. I mounted one upright in the center console for a friend (put a tv in the dash and the ac control in the glove box.) it was a little annoying to have to open the armrest to change the radio and such. anyone have one in the glove box and not like it?

Re: sound system
i know when i do it i will just moun tthe cd player under the dash,,like cb radioi will put the 6x9's and subs behind the seat once the tank it out...but i like kels idea
kelsfine69 what dud you use to make the setup you have in your glove box...i like the way it looks..plus it would be out of site,, |
Re: sound system
if you want the stock look, you could get a stock style look with the aux plug in to run mp3 players, cd players so forth there run about 180 or so.
|
Re: sound system
Yea with an mp3 playere it works really well. I just could not cut the dash and i have gauges under the dash so...in the glovebox it went. Its made from aluminum. heres the old thread
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=174225 I have a few left and after I talk to Josh, I plan on sellin them again probably in Jan. I only thing i dont like about it is if I leave the glovebox door open and I smack it off the lights, all my cds end up on the seat. |
Re: sound system
hate to keep bugging but i would still like to see one mounted under the dash
|
Re: sound system
Well, if mine doesn't fit in the dash, I might have mine done in a few weeks mounted there. Not sure what other options are at this point, but I haven't even hooked it up to see how far the screen comes out.

Re: sound system
How about the headliner with the cd and speakers. I don.t know who makes it. It was in the truck when I bought it.
|
Re: sound system
