1968 C-20 I looked at today

I saw this truck in the local auto trader The ad said it has a 396 BBC that was rebuilt 1 year ago so I figured it was worth a look.

It does have a BBC and a TH400, but I don't think they are original.

The truck has had a recent paint job, but the paint was never color sanded or buffed out, so there is a lot of orange peel. The option sheet int he glove box said it had side trim, and from what I can see, the old holes were filled with body filler. I noticed a few partial holes in the area the side trim would have been. The body seems to be pretty straight otherwise. It does have a little rust on the insides of the front doors near the rocker panels. I can tell from some bubbling paint. However, the rocker panels seem to be ok. The hood does have a dent in the center of it.

Something tells me the truck may have been gold at some point. I don't think red is the original color.

It runs and shifts very well, but with 4 wheel drums, braking is tricky. There is a fair amount of squeaking from the front end and I noticed the front sway bar doesn't have any bushings in the frame mounts.

It does have 16.5", 8-lug wheels.

The owner is asking $2000

Now for the pictures...

came with a 327 originally...nice

looks like a good truck overall. I'd get it for 2 grand.

CPNE 12-12-2004 09:05 PM

Looks to me to be a gold 50th ann. edition truck, someone painted red :banghead:

71swb4x4 12-12-2004 09:14 PM

Buy it and restore it back to original. Those 50th anniv are sharp.

WhiteLX 12-12-2004 09:20 PM

Is it possible this could be a 50th anniversary truck? I know its not the correct color right now, but looking at the column color and interior trim I am begining to wonder. It almost looks like it says code 551 in the left column at the bottom.

shortymac83 12-12-2004 09:25 PM

here's a 50th anniversary 1/2 ton. From what I can see in those pics, and what I can see in your pics, they look very similar

Looks good. $2000 sound's like a good deal. I have a 67 c-20 with the same setup 327 with a th400. Sweet. :metal:

kwmech 12-12-2004 09:45 PM

Not too bad a deal for 2 grand

Longhorn Man 12-12-2004 09:59 PM

The handle under the dash you asked about was the parking brake...67/68 was hand operated.

Sweet72 12-12-2004 10:01 PM

It's not parked in your driveway yet?

WhiteLX 12-12-2004 10:07 PM

What is the second knob just below the headlight switch? I wasn't really paying much attention to it when I drove it, but when looking back at the pictures I took of a 72 LWB it wasn't on that truck.

Also, is there a seal that goes around the filler neck in the cab? It looked to have black tape around the filler neck to create a seal.

I do like the 50th anniv. color scheme. I also like the wood bed. Maybe I'll finally have a chance to use the table saw I bought a year and a half ago. :D

Which rear end is that?

What is involved in switching to disc brakes up front with the 8-lug stuff? Maybe I should convert to 5-lug? I gotta get rid of those drums if I buy it.

I was suprised at the amount of power the truck has. Maybe its because I just got out of a 135hp 318 with a 2bbl in a full size 4x4 with 33" tires. ;)

Being a C-20 with a BBC would be nice for towing.

I have a few more pictures of trouble areas, maybe i should post those as well...

That rear is an eaton differential/corperate axle. Should be a 4.10 gear. (or is it 4.11?)
The knobs on the 67/68 aren't the same as 69 - 72 either. I think on the left it is upper/lights, lower/wipers, and off to teh right is the manual choke.
And in all reality, the drums on that sucker should be decent. They are either in need of repair, or had a light coat of rust on them.
While admitedly, they aren't as good as discs, these drums are monsters compaired to the 1/2 ton stuff.

looks like it could be a 50th anniversary truck.Good looking truck for the money IMO.

Robert1970C20rstbukt 12-12-2004 10:33 PM

The Eaton/Corp rear ends had 4.11's, Danas had the 4.10's. Yeah, these brake drums are huge. Especially the rear ones. You gotta remove the axle shafts in order to pull the rear drums too. But the 3/4 tons are worth it, no matter how much work you gotta do to 'em. Nice truck, BTW.

Hey WhiteLX. Welcome to the board. You're not too far away from me; I'm in Glendora. I have a 68 C20 327... They are great trucks. $2000 doesn't sound too bad. Especially if you wanted to restore an anniversary truck.

grayw0lf 12-12-2004 11:20 PM

After what I've already put into my truck & how it still looks & runs... I would buy that for 2,000 in a second. If I were closer, I'd try to beat you to it.

2low72 12-12-2004 11:25 PM

Buy it then trade me....I'm wanting a 3/4 ton but can't get rid of my truck..I'd buy that one in a heart beat...My wife would kill me for buying another truck but that's besides the point:)

toms68cst 12-13-2004 12:26 AM

The cheap paint job and speaker cut doors really turn me off. I'd much rather see her as she looked before she was painted so you can get a good idea what the body really needs.

Be sure to look past the newer paint job. Check around all the trouble spots with a magnet to make sure there are no bondo'd areas. If the body really seems pretty solid under that paint it's not a bad deal. AC, 50th edition and CST does add to the value some.

bow-tie-bandit 12-14-2004 08:52 PM

I happen to have a 3/4 ton 1968 50th anniversary truck with a factory 396 and camper special badging. I also used to own a 50th with buckets and a 327 that I sold before I knew what I had. This truck does indeed look like a 50th by the paint code #551, the two tone seat, the parchment door panels, and gold steering wheel. It should also have gold sun visors. I have some info on the 50th annv. trucks that I will post If I can find my CD that it is on. Hope this helps. :D

That's a good deal for two grand. Sandpaper is cheap..Take the rough paintjob off and paint it back to gold/white.

Hooter 12-15-2004 12:34 AM

heck around here, that big block would almost fetch that, BUY THAT TRUCK NOW!!!

WhiteLX 12-15-2004 12:43 AM

How would I go about switching this truck to 5 lug disc/drum or disc/disc? I really don't like the 8 lug wheel choices.

I am seriously considering this truck. It does have a 396/TH400, which is a big plus. However, it does have 8 lug wheels, 4 wheel drums, and is a longbed. However, it is probably one of the better examples I have seen for around that price.

I would really like a short wheelbase C10 though. I don't need a truck right now. My old Dodge is doing OK, so maybe I would be better off waiting.

mblackburnjr 12-15-2004 12:53 AM

Good looking prospect for the money. I really like the air cleaner. My truck has the same one.....I think its called a flatwing!
