Will disc brakes help stop my rear wheels from locking up?

My 1965 Chevy C-10 shortbed stops o.k., but the back brakes lock up easy, I've replaced everything and adjusted them. If I go with front disc brakes, would it help stop the brakes from locking up? I have a 1983 Chevy custom deluxe donor truck, how do I do it, and what all do I need to put on the 1965?

My bet would be that you have the wrong proportioning valve on your brake system and it's putting to much pressure to the rear brakes, and that's whats locking them up. Go to a salvage yard and for little or nothing you can pick one up and swap it out. Yes you can use that other truck and I don't know that it will solve your lock-up problem but it sure will stop better.

I struggled with the same problem on my 72' and finally found that the rear backing plates had grooves worn into them where the brake shoes rub. I filled the grooves with weld and ground them down flat. Problem is entirely gone. Previous to doing this, I had tried everything and replaced everything nothing worked. Inspect you rear backing plates carefully for grooves. The surface must be absolutely flat for the brakes to move smoothly and work properly.
