I'm not sure if one is any better than the other, but I went with parts from a donor truck. Much much cheaper than a kit and I don't have to guess what kind of vehicle it came from when I go to the parts store for stuff like brake pads.

Just depends on a lot of stuff. How good is your donor vehicle and how good is the kit? I used spindles and control arms from a donor but it had the wrong calipers so I had to buy rebuilt. I then ordered new steel brake lines from inline tube. I chopped the existing rubber line bracket from the donor vehicle and welded it to the front of the drum crossmember after fitting the new disc steel and rubber lines. Total cost, about $200.
