has anyone herd of a 200 4R transmission?

i was just on the bowtie overdrive site and i see they list a 2004R transmission. they say they start with a TH200 4R core/case. what are those transmission used in? would they be a better choice then the 700r4? would it replace a TH350? or would there be loads of mods to do?

please give me some info or what you guys think.

thanks

joel

all those i find around here are crusher bound and they come in stuff like cuttlass ,malibu , stuff like that

joelboxt 03-03-2005 10:38 PM

are they something to put in a truck? or are they junk?

tnblazerk5 03-03-2005 10:40 PM

i dont like them (200)and if it was me it would have a th350 or a 700r in it

joelboxt 03-03-2005 10:41 PM

i have a TH350 in my truck now i just want OD... and get a 3.73 posi rear end.

tnblazerk5 03-03-2005 10:43 PM

i would go with the 700r

neonlarry 03-03-2005 11:00 PM

I like the 200's better than the 700's closer gear ratios better OD. A lot of people knock them but if you look where GM used them (Buick GN's) they can take the HP just as well as a 700. I have seen built ones in 9 sec. cars.

Actually I have heard good things about the 200r4. It is supposed to be pretty much a bolt-in replacement for a 350. I believe they are the same length and use the same output shaft, so you can use your same driveshaft w/o any mods. Of course, you still have to use a tv cable.

joelboxt 03-03-2005 11:06 PM

ya i kinda thought it might be a direct bolt in.. because it looks damn close to a TH350.. no really sure what a TV cable is on the transmissions? just a kick down cable? does a th350 use a TV cable? please fill me in.

thanks

tnblazerk5 03-03-2005 11:10 PM

like i said up there its just me and i dont like them but to each there own i have sum freinds here that run them and are happy with them i just dont like them

joelboxt 03-03-2005 11:11 PM

neonlarry, that bowtieoverdrive place has a stage two they handle about 400/450 hp/lb and the stage three is 450/450 hp/lb.

didnt think that was to bad.. that would be enough for me..

53burb 03-03-2005 11:14 PM

The tv cable is the throttle valve cable. 350s don't use them. It hooks up to your carb or throttle body for fuel injected vehicles. The kit most people use on this site is from Bowtie Overdrives. I am not sure about the cost. From what I understand, the 200r4 was used in the Buick Grand Nationals. It should hold up to moderate horsepower engines I assume. If I had a 350, and was going to go to an OD, I would use this tranny. If I had a different tranny, like a 400 or 3spd, than I would go with a 700r4, since it is not a direct bolt-in anyways.

joelboxt 03-03-2005 11:20 PM

sounds like a plan.. i think i might look into this 200r4 deal this summer.. you think any decent transmission place could build me one to handle say 350 HP or something? i dont have that kinda horse yet but someday.

haha

bagged91 03-03-2005 11:23 PM

I know this pertians to the 700R4 so I guess it would be the same with the 200R4. When adjusting the TV cable, you need to make sure you have that done proffesionally because it needs to be set with a certian line pressure or else... POOF!:(

I myself have also been thinking of a beefed 200R4 to replace the TH350 in my burb now. It would be nice to be able to cruise at 65 mph without the motor screaming... Or maybe a nice blown LS-1/T-56 :):metal:

thanks for the tips..

if anyone has this kinda setup please post your comments...

thanks

Here is just about every useful link on the web.
I got me a 200 4R for my Jimmy, not too worried about the 250 tearing it up. Nice thing about them is you don't have to change your driveshaft, just have to move your crossmember. Every credible piece of information I have read says that the 200 4R is just as good as the 700 R4.

sounds to me like its a better way to go, a lot less money involved..

I have a 200r4 in my 85 monte carlo ss and it is a good tranny. the only thing is without the computer you have to use a high speed lockout kit for the stall converter. it shifts out real good.

i used a built 2004r from a buick grand national ,about the same price as a comperable built 700r4 . i liked the gear spread better add to that the fact it was a direct bolt in for the th350, just move back the crossmember to the th400 position ,no mods to the driveshaft and it worked great not one problem in 4years of use. properly built they hold more horsepower and torque than the 700r4
i got mine at www.fbperformance.com

72dually 03-03-2005 11:37 PM

Im also going with the 200 4R, you will need some mods above 450hp, nice gears

Car Craft has a good article this month on the 200R4. Art Carr at www.cpttransmissions.com did the build up. They put the 200 in a blown El Camino and it worked well. He's well known in the tranny biz. I used to work on trannys years ago and didn't like 200's much either. But then again a lot or GM's stuff had problems back in the eighties. We used to do a lot of mods to 700's to get them to work right and last more than 50K. .

this is a good tranny option for us with a POB bolt pattern too...the 200 4R was usually a dual bolt pattern, however, you need to watch teh converter mounting. Some aplications have a perfectly flat fly wheel, while others had raised pads...you'll want the converter to match your flywheel.
Slide the cross member back to the TTH400 spot, and slap it in with a Th350 drive shaft. The 200 4R is about 1/4 inch longer...nothing to worry about onless your shaft is a bit too big already.
The TV set up is criticle...and that's what the bow tie overdrive kit is for. Even alot of shops don't set them properly...they do it like an old kick down cable...iunstead of taking oil pressure readings and adjusting it that way. It may FEEL right...but it isn't...and it'll burn up in 6 months...there's a few ppl here that will say the same....and they have the dead tranny to prove it

dtlilly 03-04-2005 01:07 AM

Good info on this tranny here, I learned a lot. In the year I co-owned a Cottman franchise in Memphis, we never had one come in the shop... now I guess it's a testament to how good they are.

I run a BTOverdrives 200-R4 stage 3 in the Chevelle, it has held up pretty well behind my 427 even on the drag strip. It does have one problem that I need to remedy, the 2-3 full throttle flare is way too sloppy. I will not comment on BTO's customer support on this, but I will have to get my hands dirty I will say that. And buy a book on 200R4's

I love the gear spread, the OD wit the 3.73's as well. The trans was almost a complete bolt in, even with a TH400 car like I have. The mount bolted right up in the 400 location, and the driveshaft was real close, but had to use a long spicer TH350 yoke to work correctly. I have no reference directly to a 700R personally, but most go fast folks like the 200 better.
